Welterweights. 15 rounds. No footage exists (that I know of) of Walker at welter...It seems the general consensus is that he became better as a middleweight ( I subscribe to that). But judging by Walker's strength and tenacity on the film that does exist, how do you feel he would do against the very fluid Napoles?
Napoles' skill and ability versus Walker's tenacity and intensity. Very interesting one. Napoles is the more experienced fighter here, Walker the bigger one. Both factor's that should be considered. In a three fight series I think Napoles would edge it. His slickness and experience would see carry him through some scary moments but in the end he would win close decisions. Walker I just feel lacks the top notch experience at welter to come out on top of Napoles in a series. But I think he would win the first fight.
I think Walker came into his own from middleweight on to varying degrees of success...the war with Greb...winning the middleweight title..campaigning all the way up to the heavy division and bouts with Sharkey and Schmeling..but at welter, Napoles wins this one...and through the way his nicknaame "Mantequilla" suggests...by outslicking, outboxing and countering his way to a 15 round decision..Napoles would be respectful of Walker's sheer will and strength and tenacity, but he would be a bit too sophisticated for the Toy Bulldog.
You can't put Walker back, Napoles can't out-punch him. So Napoles needs to out-box him through white-hot pressure. I believe that Walker is harder to hit clean than is generally held to be the case and that this stands him in good stead in a lot of fights at WW where he can be basically wherever he wants to be without getting stopped (yes that includes Robinson and Hearns) because he is going to win rounds on aggression/workrate. Aggression is scored. Every era, it is scored. I think it is scored as heavily now as it was back in Walker's era. Anyway, Napoles will hit him clean, and can stay out of the way with skill. But not forever. I just think that Walker is too aggressive and strong. It's a horrible pick but I think that Walker hustles and bustles his way to some kind of late TKO whilst behind on the cards, whether it's via a big punch and follow up or yes, cuts. I think the weight of evidence stands for a Walker stoppage win. But if Napoles can hear the final bell he is good enough to take a UD.
Covered all the angles there and rightfully so, it's a tough pick. Obviously I'm well ware of Walker but have only seen the bits of his fight with Loughran. Is there any footage of him at Middle?
**** watching him at MW, how about HW? [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZsv25ulaSY&feature=PlayList&p=4F33F8968C2FC225&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=2[/ame] Actually running back for more against one of the most dangerous punchers of the era.
Yeah, he was. Cuts, and quite a few DQ's. Plus he was KO'd when fighting at 140 against a MW, early. In what you would call his WW MW prime he was never KO'd.
He was a couple of times when he was a novice...Then once on cuts. Never seen them..dont really know the details..just boxrec'in it.
Cheers lads. Walker is no doubt a lock for the top 20 IMO. Tough as ****, and 'old' or 'modern' with his style and durability, he'd give anyone Hell.
Head to head i'd rate him very, very close to the top at WW based upon what we have on film at other weights and what he did througout his career. May be overating him a bit, but like you say, he gives anyone hell.
I love it when people talk of Walker as though he is primitive technically and because of this is would be made redundant in the modern era. On physical prowess alone he is a top fighter in any era. Its not as though there isnt a massive chunk of todays talent that rely mostly on that aswell. If Ricardo Mayorga can become a top fighter in this time.....
