A true sadist's matchup, agreed? Scheduled, of course for the traditional 15 round limit. Who wins? (sarc)
Funnily enough I watched Napoles v Stracey on ESPN tonight, even a shot 35 going on 40 Napoles still looked impressive in spots ,he would absolutely destroy Mayorga ,Napoles was a picture perfect punch picker,PPPP! Very economical and accurate ,a wonder ul judge of pace good legs and ring smarts ,he knew when to close the show and when to bide his time,a great fighter, his only achilles heel was as he aged the scar tissue over his eyes left him somewhat prone to cuts. I rate him better than Griffith, and several levels above the wild Mayorga.
I'd be interested to see how badly Mayorga gets outclassed. Would be fun(ny) to witness. Napoles was brilliant, I have also been viewing a lot of him recently, though a more prime version.
Mayorga was too slick and smooth. His straighter shots and greater accuracy would be the difference against the crude, unpolished Napoles who tended to load up on every shot. Easy fight for the technically brilliant Mayorga
I honestly don't believe that Mayorga would make it to the end of round three. It's one thing to see him get outclassed by Tito and Oscar, but this would be a complete mismatch with a laser accurate Napoles outboxing him for two rounds and then ending it almost effortlessly in the 3rd or maybe even the 2nd by a ko, and probably not even missing a punch. It would be a welter version of Muhammad Ali-Brian London, with an almost casual flurry of POWER punches all landing with pinpoint accuracy being the only difference.
On a more serious note, this would be brutal. Mayorga would get beat down and blasted with accurate shots until he's stopped.
If they ever really fought, Napoles may well have ruined Mayorga as a fighter. Mayorga has virtually no defense worth speaking of, and Napoles was a deadly accurate POWER puncher. Refer to his two fights with Ernie Lopez to name just one example. Much was made about the power AND accuracy of Mantequilla's punches in those fights. Lopez was an aggresive brawler, but had more on the ball defensively than Mayorga. He was just destroyed by Napoles in those two fights. Just generally beat up in the first fight, and hit by a single right hand in the rematch that not only knocked him unconscious, but also knocked his left eyeball out of it's socket. It was a scary ko, and I wish there was some footage out there somewhere of it. Napoles could be a bit like Joe Louis in terms of the deadliness of his shots.
Napoles would destroy he was extremely smooth with his combination and had serious power and a great chin, Mayorga only chance is if he cuts Napoles.
Napoles, relatively early blowout. He's a class above and wouldn't have much trouble landing consistently.
