Wrong! Dundee correctly told Leonard late in the fight, you're blowing it. Leonard who was bigger and better than Napoles could not out box Hearns, he had to make it a war and stopped him. So Napoles on points is very unlikely to happen. I think Hearns at welter hit as hard or harder than Monzon did at middle and what happened there to Napoles? Hearns has too much power and range combined with speed, and more size Naples isn't a big puncher, and would have a real hard time engaging.
but he did, didn't he .. mid range and infighting is part of the sport too ... and I think it's a mistake to gravitate towards the Monzon fight, who was fighting consistently 13 pounds above where Jose was fighting at, and was one of the best middles of all time, and assume a 147 lb. Hearns is equal to a 160 lbs. Monzon, completely unrealistic
Mugabi outboxed Hargrove, Foreman outboxed Frazier, Bowe outboxed Holyfield, Hearns outboxed Schuler, Duran outboxed SRL, Ike outboxed Tua etc. You don't think any of this seems a tad peculiar?
I'm talking Ray vs Tommy. It's not like that Ray landed a hail mary 1 punch KO .. He was patient, he measured the distance, he started going to body and landing clean powerful shots, then going up stairs landing clean powerful hooks, combinations, everything. In the later rounds, he broke Tommy down and KO'd him. being ... And after all that, if it is the opinion of people that Tommy out boxed Ray, it is 2 people seeing the sport differently
I don't think Ray broke down Hearns in a calm way. He looked a little desperate in there with Tommy busting him up with the jab, and had Tommy not ran out of gas I think Ray losses a decision. Your blowing it was great for Angelo. but the fact was had Tommy not ran out of gas in round 13, it wouldn't have mattered.
Let's not take anything away from Ray here though.. A trainer telling his fighter to do something and the fighter going out and executing are 2 completely different things.. And we do not know if Tommy didn't run out of gas what would have happened, I think Ray still lands and hurts Tommy and stops him.. I know you are not big on excuses, so let's not make them here for Hearns. I mean it's like people turned off the fight round 12 and missed Ray taking Tommy apart in the championship rounds ... It was these championship rounds and this fight probably being the single most important reason Ray is where he is in history and Tommy is where he is , imo , if Tommy wins he might be higher than Ray p4p imo
Jose was an excellent boxer/puncher with good legs, he could put on a Benitez type performance but Jose suffered from cuts & Hearns was a Phenom at 147. I see a HEARNS wins but could go the full route if not for a cut stop.
That is valid, but I do think Ray was the person who made it happen not Angelo. It was a good story. Sort of like Teddy Atlas and saying I am the fireman or something like that not long ago.. Ray is higher than most. Those wins against Wilfred, Roberto,Tommy and Marvin is a heck of a list. The other guys didn't beat them all. and Marvin had he beaten Ray,,, still wouldn't be as high as Ray since he beat guys moving up.
Hearns gives Napoles a similar beating that Monzon dished out. Too much height, reach, and power even for a great fighter like Napoles.
Napoles was the more skilled fighter, but I don't see him outboxing Hearns, due to the vast gap in stature and length - coupled with Hearn's job and power keeping Napoles honest.
Leonard helped him run out of gas brother, it's the body work, and Leonard realizing he was getting his butt kicked at long distance, getting off his toes and forcing the fight that ultimately lead to his victory. Hearns didn't just "Run out of gas" on his own, the body attack Leonard started focusing on around the 6th rd was the difference.
