I am always seeing him on P4P lists at around 30-40 mark yet know little despite him being a champ at 147 who lost to King Carlos. What was his resume like? Do you feel his wins and the way he won deserved such a high ranking? Was the 1970's welterweight era anything special at all? Thanks
To start, yes the early 1970's had great talent in the Welters with fighters like Cervantes, Cuevas, Palomino, Lopez, Cokes, Griffeth, ect... Not to mention they fought 15 rounds back then so fighters had to really be conditioned. Napoles nickname is "Mantequilla" (pronaunced Man-tek-eeya) which translated to butter. He was given this moniker because of his smooth boxing skills. Jose Napoles defended his title a total of 13 times.
not to mention that he was a 135-140lbs, he move up to WW because Ortiz never gave him a shot of the tittle.
