On December 13 in Mexico, there’s a low-key fight card that’s worth a look for its vacant IBF bantamweight title bout.

Mexican fighter Jose Salas Reyes “El Chapulín”, 23 years old, 16-0-0 (10 KOs), ranked IBF #3, will take on South African Landile Ngxeke “Mandown”, 30 years old, 16-1-1 (8 KOs), ranked IBF #4 and #8 in the world on BoxRec. Since the IBF currently has no fighters ranked #1 or #2, the two will square off for the vacant belt.

Jose Salas Reyes is one of Mexico’s most talked-about young prospects. A southpaw with a style built on lots of feints, solid footwork, excellent counterpunching, real power, and a sharp jab he throws from unusual angles. At 1.70m, he’s also physically imposing for the weight class. On paper, he looks like a very complete fighter for his age.

On the other side, we have the more seasoned Landile Ngxeke, a classic orthodox boxer who’s been through tougher fights. He has long reach for a bantamweight, a tight, compact guard, and he also likes to work from range to get full use of his jab. This fight is likely to look like a jab battle, with both men looking to score on the counter.

It should be a highly technical, tactical matchup. Jose Salas Reyes is the favorite, but Landile Ngxeke is very effective at distance and has the experience to find openings for his right hand.
