Spinks was a class above Torres. Torres would take the early lead, as Spinks ALWAYS started slow... Torres might even stun Spinks early. But Mike would gradually warm up, and begin to take Torres apart, and circa 9-10 he lowers the boom with The Jinx.
MSpinks wins via a late round TKO in 15 rd bout. Both guys beat up pretty bad. Torres was still in the Army when he won the Silver Medal in the light middleweight division at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games, where he lost to László Papp of Hungary in the final. Torres was a true MW who moved up out of that excellent early 60's era group. Beat old Bobo Olson, Willie Pastrano for LtHvy Title, then hvywt contender Tom McNeely in an over the weight bout, then defended against Wayne Thorton, Eddie Cotton, and Chic Calderwood, all decent Ltheavies. Lost LtHvy title to Dick Tiger, and the rematch which many thought Torres won. 1964-11-27 : Bobo Olson 176 lbs lost to Jose Torres 170½ lbs by KO at 2:51 in round 1 of 10 Location: Madison Square Garden, New York, New York, USA Referee: Johnny LoBianco Ring Magazine Round of the Year "Jose Torres, making his first start as a light heavyweight, scored a stunning 1st round knockout of Bobo Olson Friday night. The end came with shocking abruptness at 2:51 of the 1st of a scheduled 10 rounder. Olson appeared to be moving along nicely. Then Torres opened up a flashing, two-handed flurry. Olson looked up into the midst of it, a left hand caught him flush on the chin and it was over. He was on his knees in an almost prayerful pose in front of referee Johnny Lobianco when the count reached ten." -Associated Press Post fight comment "I got him with a left to the ribs and I hurt him. I heard him go, 'Ohhhh.' Then I opened up with a left-right-left. I knew it was all over." -Jose Torres This content is protected
