Exactly. Messi in some respects dodged a bullet by having his career cut short. Had he continued, I suspect he would have been stopped quite a few times.
Absolutely by K2. I'm not sure I'd bet the farm on the Brocks or Guinns of the world (or even Rahman) icing him, though.
Apparently his son's fighting now. Joseph Jr., heavyweight based in Buffalo like his dad...won the New York State Golden Gloves last year. That is very marketable as a "universe dealing the family a second hand" story, if he winds up being any good as a pro.
Yes, Morrison had the power and the publicity machine. Rocky 5 and the made up **** about him being John Wayne's nephew.
All I know is that he missed out on a huge payday in his home arena. Michael Gerard Tyson in Buffalo.
Was never impressed with Mesi. If he was in this era I don't think he's a top 7 guy. In his era I dont think he could have been a belt holder outside of some lucky management.
Funny - he just popped into my head randomly, and in the course of googling his name this very thread (made by me a week and one year ago today) was on the first page of hits. Also found this hilarious old thread from 2007 with people mercilessly roasting the OP for even suggesting a Joe vs. Wlad matchup. https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/mesi-klitschko-2k8-who-takes-it.13805/
Like Ray Mancini and his dad....good story. Would have been front page news on the 80's, now, only a local phenomenon. Baby Joe certainly reached his ceiling. Either Klit would have KO'D him.
I remember him - exciting fighter, big fan base. I was sorry to see him exit before he wanted to. In terms of ceiling, I agree with the broad consensus here. It was a fairly weak division. And if the stars aligned he might have been capable of beating one or two of the lower tier champions. With his style and following he might have even got multiple attempts. But it would have been a short lived reign. He was more of a lower tier top ten guy in that era. I don't think, respectfully, we missed out on a dominant champion. But he probably would have achieved a few more notable wins - and losses - than he did
