Yeah I didn't expect that BUT I think a lot of people were wowed by Hughie's sharp "looks" etc, Parker is often not "pretty" but what he does is usually effective enough. His defense was MUCH better than I've seen it before in this fight which imho is what won him the fight. It's like people just assumed that Parker would be as open as he was in previous fights and any nice looking shot that Hughie threw would hit home. They didn't. And a good amount of good shots Hughie got, Parker made him pay for within seconds.
This needs its own thread, compared to YouTube ESB scored the fight far more accurately tbf, most people here had Parker winning. Disclaimer: I think compubox is a bunch of nerds that wouldn't know a punch if it hit them in the face, I don't believe the stats tbh, seemed much closer in real life.
Bang on up if you want. I was with a bunch of real casuals watching this, they saw the jabs from Hughie, and the dancing and thought Parker was well behind. I was explaining to them constantly to see how many jabs actually connected. Had one guy count on his hand. Then they worked out, that Parker was landing the blows.
At ringside you can hear and see the 'thuds' from the 'pitter patters'. They wouldve been a factor for the judges and the compubox tallies.
"Yeah I didn't expect that BUT I think a lot of people were wowed by Hughie's sharp "looks" etc" I'll be honest I'm one of them, I thought Fury outboxed and outlanded Parker...I'll rewatch the fight
Definitely agree with that. Parker usually looks at his worst defensively when he is retreating in a straight line though - can't remember Fury making him retreat once.
Parker's looked pretty bad in his last THREE fights. But he's still probably the best fighter Joshua's faced apart from Klitschko. And he's just turned 26 so there's a good chance he can put it together and improve on the night. Hughie Fury fought such an evasive fight, running all night, it's difficult to even judge how bad Parker actually did. There's a real chance Hughie could make Joshua look dull too, with that movement and reluctance to engage or commit to punching. I'd rather be optimistic and consider Parker has a chance to do well or even win it. I thought late-notice Takam gave Joshua a decent test and there's no reason Parker can't be expected to do better.
I stick to my AJ KO prediction Hughie made Parker look one dimensional...AJ is a flatfooted stiff though...but I still think he should prevail.
Looks like Mick Hennessy is on his last legs as a promoter. His Fury-Parker farce must have cost him a fortune.
It appears Hennessy's financial future was riding on the result. Perhaps he should have told Hughie pre-fight it was important he won. Hughie might then have tried to make a fight out of it instead of a running race.
