Once and for all, let's have it out and put this colicky baby to bed.

Who is the greatest - and/or best head to head - British super middleweight of this millennium? (and perhaps of all time, possibly excepting Benn & Eubank)

Needless to say two very different styles in the ring - diametrically opposed, you might say. There are things about each that could frustrate the other. In whose balance does that all tilt by night's end?

And would it make much difference whether they fought in front of 50k in Cardiff or 80k at Wembley?

Carl Frochs ego would be even more damaged if the latter happened.

Yeah he isn't as color by numbers textbook as Kessler but he still had a style I could see Joe analyzing for a few rounds and then picking apart, with Carl's psychology falling to pieces as it bore on. In front of his own fans could well be a case of "and he was never seen or heard from again..."

Froch's possible saving grace here is his excellent/underrated awkward body punching - that at times looked to be maybe a weakness on Calzaghe. Obviously nobody was ever able to exploit it ad victoriam, but we saw him bothered down there plenty.

    I would back Froch.

His skills are underrated because he wasn't flashy and liked to brawl. But look how he did when he boxed more conservative, like against Groves in the second fight. Groves was faster, slicker, faster hands and all that but the fight was close until the KO. Also the Bute fight is important because Bute is like Calzaghe, fast and flashy, and Froch still managed to land well.

Then in addition he has more power and is probably tougher.

The volume punching isn't going to do anything to him, either. You need real power to back Froch off and even then it doesn't always work (Groves). If you don't have big power you need to grapple the life out of him (Ward).

Froch also has the relentless engine, so he'll keep coming on.

I think he just works away and starts landing when Calzaghe slows a bit, and eventually Froch probably starts landing flurries and brawling, not paying much respect to what's coming back, and beats him up at least enough to get the rounds.

    Well said.

Le Tombeur is a decent enough proxy for JC (really not too many just like him) but for all the hype I don't think Bute was ever nearly as good.

But your points have merit.

Lol. Let's be honest that Andre Ward fans are going to say Froch those with eyes are going to say Calzaghe.

Froch is my all time favourite no nonsense fighter but he cant beat slappy Joe. Calzaghe on points, though he might lose a few in the first half. He adaptions as the fight went on better than most from the last 20 years. Froch would start well but but get scrappy and desperate by the end

Goddamn shame the universe couldn't have aligned their primes so Calzaghe vs. Ward could've happened.

I was a Froch fan, Calzaghe, I could take or leave. I felt Froch, overall fought better opposition. I had Froch beating Kessler first time around unlike the judges. I gotta go with Froch.

I'm the head of the 'not a fan of Andre Ward' club but I would go with Froch. There's no real logic behind my pick though....lol!

I dont think there is a better fantasy fight at 168, though it might end up dull as **** with more holding than a Sumo wrestle. I would prefer to watch Froch v Calzaghe but Ward v Calzaghe would be for the GOAT at 168

Calzaghe is going to be too quick and busy for him imho.

Froch was one of my favourite fighters, he was tough as nails. Those two fights vs groves were great.
