    12 rounds at 168 pounds.

Night and day styles, really as different as it gets, but a pair of the most effective fighters ever at the weight. Joe obviously spent the bulk of his career there, while James fought there for a relative cup of coffee, but Toney's quality of his opposition faced was quite high and his one loss was to an even better fighter in prime RJJ than Calzaghe's best in Kessler.

Tough one but at his best and if he turns up in shape I fancy Toney in this one. That said Joe is hard to beat, very interesting fight.

Toney by his own admission cant deal with Italian volume punching. Calzaghe wins a competitive decision via outworking Toney.

Ain't it? Very high mutual skill level, but so much would depend on who found the other's style more discomfiting. And that's...almost impossible to say without seeing it unfold. There are things about either man that could drive the other batty.

You have hit the nail on the head. Yeah we really wouldn't know how their respective styles would gel tbh. I would expect Toney to take the early rounds but who knows.

If Toney is in shape I maybe give him the slight edge. While Calzaghe is tough to beat with his high volume style, Toney can negate much of that with his defensive skills and counter punching as his fight with Jirov showed, just throwing punches non stop isn't enough to beat Toney. Plus Calzage's weakness is to the right hand which is Toney's forte, I can see him landing the counter right hand all fight long. If RJJ and Hopkins can drop Calzaghe with a right hand then so can Toney, in fact I'd expect to see an early knockdown as Calzaghe takes a counter right hand flush, but of course gets up.

But then again maybe Calzaghe isn't Jirov and maybe realises his high volume style isn't working with Toney and he moves and boxes more like he did vs Kessler, Calzaghe's ring IQ tends to get underrated and he does have the movement to give Toney problems. Damn it's a tough one to call.

I thinking it goes the cards as both are too durable. We probably end up with a split decision, some judges preferring the defense and cleaner punching of Toney while another judge will favour Calzaghe's volume and aggression. Probably whatever the result it riles up fans with many calling robbery like we get with all close fights.

Toney couldn't deal with the volume of McCallum and Griffin, and the slow as molasses lethargic volume of Thadzi. Calzaghe shoeshines him to a wide UD.

Calzaghe mauls him. I love Toney to death but volume punchers did very well against Toney.

I mean, I am a Toney fan and I'll pick him, but I can see it either way. Calzaghe's speed against Toney's defense. I think Joe's chances go up considerably if it is a younger version that can punch with impunity.

As I said in the classic forum Toney by decision, he beat elite Southpaws like Nunn, Johnson, Jirov. And could deal with Calzaghe's pressure as the Jirov fight showed.

Griffin was short and awkward and Toney should've of got the nod against him two times. Nunn a Southpaw threw plenty of combinations had high a workrate and was quick Toney KO'ed him, Jirov who threw 100s of punches who was also a Southpaw Toney dealt with him.

Skill can only take you so far. Calzaghe has too much raw talent.

JT wins. I love Super Joe Calzaghe but peak JT is a bad mother****er who would get to Calzaghe who we must never forget probably lost to Reid and B-Hop and went life and death with Kessler who Ward schooled. Can you imagine Kessler going life and death with peak JT.

I think you're right, volume would be the key for Joe. Probably wouldn't be that entertaining of a fight but it would be interesting in the way the styles clash.
