James Toney. No question, no doubt and no bias. He was just a much, much, much better fighter.

If Toney couldn't deal with a hobo version of Calzaghe in Tiberi, how is he going to deal with the real thing?

Calzaghe should be able to use his speed, workrate and catlike reflexes to win a comfortable decision over Toney.

If you get whooped by RJJ how are you going to deal with the guy that beat RJJ? ;)

Before y'all start howling, Calzaghe was also slower by the time he fought Hops and RJJ. That was not prime zaggers.

Prime Calzaghe is not going to gas out like Nunn did.

Your posts are just so biased and pointless. If Toney coul not deal with Tiberi, how was he able to deal with the busy Williams and Jirov?

There's two sides to every story and Tiberi completely outworking Toney is one side of the story. I'm also a consistency guy and Calzaghe was very, very consistent. Toney could be masterful when he got out the right side of the bed, was in the right mood, trained the right way and was facing the right sort of opponent. To me that's not good enough at the highest level.

I like how this match-up produces three very distinct ranges of analysis:

    • those of us who find it mystifying unpredictable and think it probably would be closely fought (or maybe not, if one guy really established himself and confounded the other, but that's unknowable in the hypothetical and would have to reveal itself on the night in real life)
    • those convinced that Calzaghe would easily outwork him and take a clear W.
    • those convinced Toney has the cure to all southpaws and would finesse him.

...and groups B & C are wholly assured of themselves and unwilling to entertain the idea that maybe the other's sides points have any merit.

That's how you know it's an interesting one to contemplate. :deal:

If Toney is not at his best, I can agree that Joe would beat him. At their respective best and I understand that this is what this thread is about, I favour Toney to win by close decision.

Classic has it 11-9 in Calzaghe's favor; the General Forum has it 26-15-1.

One of the reasons Toney annoys me is because, good as he was, he could have been even better if he'd given a hot damn half the time.

he did not have the discipline. in the 2 biggest fights of his career (Rahman and Jones) he was not in the right shape. (weighing in at 240 for the WBC title against Rahman is unforgivable)

I think it goes to the cards and results in a very close verdict. I can see it go either way
