What I like about this site is how quick they bring out the ban hammer.

 

I had a thread planned, which was to feature Taylor prominently, about 'dirty boxing' and the double-standards applied on this forum. I guess this is as good a place as any to boil it down to a more succinct post.

To clarify, I have no issue with any of Josh's clinching and use of dark arts in the Ramírez fight. What I don't get is why some others who value 'clean boxing' so dearly have no issue with it.

99% of the time, fans' complaints about dirty tactics amount to biased whining from guys who turn a blind eye when their own favorites bend the rules.

Go into a boxing gym of any particular note. Spar. You will be taught and encouraged to rough your man up, get dirty, along with all the good stuff like footwork, slipping shots, punching in combination, keeping/bringing your gloves in/back to correct defensive position. It's part of the 'game'. You will be told, "The referee will let you know if he doesn't want you doing something." Boxing is a very tough, physical sport that has no room for tender feelings and weakness right off the bat. You can't be in there crying about how the other guy is getting rough.

With that said, there are some rare, extreme cases of professional bouts where spoiling/fouling is practiced at artless, risible levels that are difficult to ignore or justify. Klitschko-Povetkin is a good example — there was very little craft in what Wladimir was doing in there, it was desperate and pathetic. Mares-Agbeko I was also ridiculous, only enabled by an utterly corrupt official.

But think of your favorite fighter and ask yourself, 'How clean are they?' Take Miguel Cotto. Put aside the time he hit Zab in the dick, he was pretty clean, right? Not according to Paul Malignaggi, who has previously commented on how badly his shins were mashed up over the course of his bout with the Puerto Rican. Bear in mind that Paul was actually praising Cotto for his subtle nous when passing that comment.

I realise that this missive isn't going to change anything, but I thought it was worth posting all the same.

 

This is just dumb and super salty. I don't like Josh Taylor but he won fair and square.

 

There's clearly different levels to this. I don't really have a problem with a bit of roughing up. it's boxing and there is some skill required.
Testicle punches headbutt's not so much. Vlad v Povetkin was bad. I tend to think what would happen if the fight was on neutral ground.
That's the line I draw the line myself between it being a little rough and ready. to a fighter clearly and repeatedly breaking the rules and the spirit of the sport.
