Agreed. He should have been able to fare better at long to medium range than he did last night. Instead, he seemed to fall in love with his hardman image, getting jarringly outboxed for stretches and too often being reduced to just trying to maul Catterall in-close without enough in the way of craft to achieve it. Andre Ward was crucified some time back for pointing out Taylor's limitations in close quarters, but he was right. Just goes to show that being dirty isn't the whole or defining story behind some guys' successes — Taylor was plenty dirty last night, a right that many of the great inside technicians have reserved, but he was much less effective than them. I never have been sold on him as a strong-arm infighter, but it would seem that even I gave him too much credit in that area, as Catterall nullified him quite capably in situations where I'd have expected the Englishman's resistance to be eroded (though there has to be some kudos to Jack, who obviously foresaw and prepared diligently for those moments).

He might be screwed either way. He's out grown 140lbs if he's rehydrating 16-17lbs like they said but at welter which is deeper he'd likely fail to beat any of the top guys. But he's 31 already and there's more money at welter with the bigger names, so it might be the smart move to cash out and then retire.
