This guy seems to be one of the most underrated talents at 147 pounds. I just watched his fight against Margarito and I am almost sure that if his hand wasn't injured he would have won a pretty wide UD. Considering this the only time he was actually defeated in the boxing sense was years ago earlier in his career. I think a healthy Clottey could beat alot of the best Welterweights out there. What do you guys think about Clottey, and what might his future hold?

Very good fighter, great defence, very solid chin, can bang a bit when he needs to aswell, as you would of seen from the Margarito fight when he landed that big uppercut.

Unfortunately for him, he fights in a division with 3 other world classes fighter in Margarito, Cotto and Williams. Even if PW doesn't return, he's still 3rd best, currently 4th best in my opinion.

As a fighter, his stamina is pretty questionable. He's also a bit too tentative to throw at times and tends to cover up a bit too much.

He think he has a chance against any other WW and I would take him to beat Margarito in a rematch.I think he is an excellent fighter but no one wants to fight him. Eventually they will have too!

He's a big WW and very strong. He's avoided like all the other very good fighters without high profile names. I'd like to see him fight Cotto or Williams.

i think he will eventually go to JR. WW, There is no fights for him in that division, hopefully Andre Berto. I think he can beat Miguel Cotto, maybe Antonio Margarito, and since Paul Williams is now a Jr. middleweight why not go up? He is definitely big for WW and at Jr. middleweight he will have major competitive fights in that stacked division.

Let me tell you this. He's so good, that Top Rank signed him just to keep him away from Cotto and Margarito easier.

hes the best welter out there right now. He is a better fighter than ike in his prime. Hell be undisputed welter champ, mark my words. the only person who can beat him is mayweather.

not just great defence, almost perfect defence. Just look at margo's face after their fight. Margo looked like a beaten guy. Damn shame clottey hurt his hand.

Tough fighter, but he not exciting enough. Remember when Gatti kept getting big fights after loss after loss. He was exciting. I personally thought it was ridiculous though.

He takes a really strange amount of heat; and it's sort of a unique situation...

Margarito haters (that is, the immature kind, who will warp logic to serve their ends; as distinguished from the objective and rational haters such as myself :D) like to trash Clottey to put Marg down, noting that Clottey was winning handily, if you'll excuse the pun, prior to his boo-boo. The "logic" here is that if a mediocre fighter, as they insist Clottey is, was able to school Antonio under ideal conditions, it proves how ordinary and fatally flawed he is considering the stature he enjoys among his nuthuggers...speaking of whom...

Margarito nuthuggers (that is, the immature kind, who will warp logic to lash out at any perceived threat to their guy's manhood or populist mystique as the premiere and tragically, chronically ducked welter) like to trash Clottey because they don't like hearing that Clottey almost won (or, according to my (unofficial) scorecard and that of a few other discerning armchair judges, DID in fact eke out a very close points victory despite slowing down and dropping rounds due to inactivity in the latter half). They seem to take all the other group's insistence that Clottey is mediocre to heart, and seem desperate to maintain that there's no way Margarito could lose to a mediocre fighter. The "logic" here ranges from a) Margarito hardly lost any of those early rounds to b) Margarito's hands were just as hurt to c) Tony's just a slow starter and would have eventually beaten Joshua anyway as he got into a groove.

The fact is, Clottey is a very good fighter. Not great, but not mediocre either. He is, at the end of the day, a better fighter than Margarito, and based on styles beats him at least three times out of five IMO. Margarito is not a terrible fighter but is a far cry from the invincible division kingpin his supporters make him out to be.

Trying to burn the candle at both ends and argue from a MODERATE perspective against TWO EXTREMES can be a very slippery slope on ESB (as inevitably each side is going to attempt to lump you in with the other; ie Margarito haters have accused me of being a nuthugger and using insidiuous tactics to elevate his status by promoting Clottey as a quality fighter, apparently having missed my very vocal history of not being able to stand Tony - and Margarito nuthuggers have accused me of being an unreasonable hater and using insidious tactics to undermine his status by suggesting that Clottey is the superior pugilist) - but I think I'm getting the hang of it. This is good training if I ever decide to pursue a career as a kindergarten teacher.

Teeeeeeeeeacher! What is "populist mystique"? :D

Great post. Not sure I agree that Clottey is the superior fighter, but while he's in his prime and as long as he can avoid the ring rust associated with being this avoided, his chin, stamina, and laser of a jab are a problem for any welterweight out there. The only active fighter at 147 who could flat out outclass him is Paul Williams.

Of course, Mayweather could also, but he's waiting on the testicular donor list.
