Taking place May in Glasgow. Ten rounds scheduled at welterweight. Taylor, who at one time or another wore all the major championships at 140lbs (including the WBC, Ring Magazine, lineal, WBO, IBF, and WBA), is coming off a pair of consecutive defeats in the division. He went 0-1 in both of the last two calendar years. This will be his first time campaigning at the 147lb limit since he beat Alfonso Leonel Olvera in 2017. Essuman is based in Nottinghamshire, but hails from Botswana - the country's most successful professional boxer ever, by far (they surprisingly have actually had several Olympians). His top amateur victories - Lewis Ritson and Ted Cheeseman - might still just overshadow his best work on the domestic scene in the UK since turning pro. Age, height, and reach are pretty much each a wash. Zero common opponents - no shock, as Taylor has fought mostly at super lightweight and Essuman has boxed as high as junior middle and even middleweight.
About time Taylor gets back in the ring. I’ve been rewatching him a lot recently and forgot how great he was offensively. Anyway, the man has been training consistently on his socials and the weight cut won’t be a factor. I expect a good performance from him. If he loses to Essuman, it’s time to hang ‘em up.
