El Centro boxer Joshua “Superman” Marks is ready to resume is professional boxing career Aug. 29 in Mexicali.

El Centro native Joshua “Superman” Marks will return to the boxing ring after a two-year break to serve in the U.S. Army.

The 22-year-old will resume his professional boxing career when he steps into the ring in a welterweight match in Mexicali on Aug. 29.

The event titled “Fuego en Mexicali,” or Fire in Mexicali includes, features 12 bouts including the main event — a battle for the FIB and AMB world title belts between Panama’s Celestino “Pelenchin” Caballero and Mexicali’s Francisco “Franky” Leal.

The event will be held at Ciudad Deportiva — home of Los Aguilas de Mexicali — and is expected to draw thousands of spectators.

“That’s what I want,” said Marks. “I want people to watch me perform.”

Marks was born in Fort Stewart, Ga., but raised in El Centro. He graduated from Central Union High in 2006 and started his boxing career soon after.

“I was getting in trouble for fighting, so I got into boxing,” Marks said.

It was his best friend, Salvador Ayala, who got him into the boxing gymnasium and Marks hasn’t looked back.

He had only a few amateur fights before turning professional on March 2, 2007. He won his first bout with a knockout in the first round.

He is currently 5-1 with five knockouts and his only loss coming by way of split decision.

On Tuesday, coordinators for the Mexicali event held a press conference in El Centro in hopes of attracting Imperial Valley boxing fans to the event.

“We invite you to come. Mexicali welcomes you,” said Eloy Moreno, a representative from the Baja California department of tourism. “We want to assure you that Mexicali is a safe city, tranquil and offers high-caliber sporting events.”

The event is set to start at 7 p.m.
