He could have just kept Robert Garcia and build off that. He just needs to face the fact that Usyk is just better than him. It happens! Usyk is THAT guy and Joshua’s ego just couldn’t accept that. Lol He’ll win a few more fights but his psyche is damaged big time for those two Usyk losses. He’ll eventually fall off the rails and lose focus. Lol Oh well
AJ doesn't need a yes man. Prey to god James isn't one. Garcia turned into one, that corner was pathetic
I often wonder how many of these trainers "accidentally" grabbed used pads and got their fighter suspended for a year, thus ruining their career?
You know a fighter has lost his confidence when he starts to trade trainers after successive fights. AJ is done.
Derrick James fighters have iron chins, Joshua doesn't. If he fights like Spence or Charlo he's getting clipped quick.
He's a good trainer but Joshua's issues are less technical and more mental. He's lost twice to the same man. That eliminates the 'bad day at the office' excuse. He had a different trainer for both Usyk fights and came up with the same result. When you've been built up to be 'the man' and then find out you're not, that's a tough hurdle to overcome. He's also an athletic boxer entering his mid-30s, so the physical decline has almost certainly started. At this stage of a career the technical prowess should already be in place to paper over the physical cracks which start to emerge as fighters age. He also absolutely hates being punched in the face (all boxers do but he becomes instantly disorganised) to the extent he won't/can't box in the way that could still make his freakishly good athleticism decisive. TL/DR - A new trainer can make marginal gains but all the above means we've already seen the best of Joshua. New trainer musical chairs never seems to make a positive difference to fighters...
Great point, but like @DoubleJab666 mentioned... his mental toughness/stamina isn't on par with the others. If Josh can't achieve with Derrick James, he's finished.
If being a Olympic gold medalist, world champion and multi millionaire being considered a “useless bum” I bet every man would like to be one
Great choice. Derrick James' fighters have some of the most solid skills and fundamentals in the game. AJ needs some old school fluidity training methods. He has power but the "stiff bodybuilder" label by some is warranted. Still plenty of great fights for him and he can make small improvements.
It is a great pick for AJ, coach James is a class act, extremelly competent, his fighters are always performing their best. Being around Spence and Charlo can only benefit AJ
Kind of disappointing actually, Robert Garcia did a fine job with him. When is this mentally broken dummy going to sit down and finally assess his rematch with Usyk correctly with a clear mind? His performance in that match was perhaps one of the finest of his career, while yes, he still lost almost every round of the fight, he only lost many of the rounds 55/45 or 60/40, which is a marked improvement from his first showing. The reality is, the mere fact that he could hang with Usyk at times, means he's better than the vast majority of active Heavyweights. There should be no shame in losing to Usyk, once he gets past that, and sees that performance for what it was, a solid but losing effort against a next level Mayweather like operator, who's a nightmare for almost everyone to fight, then maybe he can get his head screwed on straight again. Literally that's all it would take for him to be a top fighter again. I can't believe I'm actually saying this, it's AJ who's underrating himself. While I, one of his most ardent haters on the site, thinks iron sharpens iron, and fighting Usyk back to back, has made him a much improved far more dangerous fighter.
