Well doesn't the fact that he's now a contender but also has 12 losses fit perfectly with the theme of the thread given that the thread is about journeyman who reinvented themselves as contenders?
He WAS a journeyman...Started his pro career 19-11 in his first 30 fights...Since his rough start he is on a roll with a 19-1 record in his last 20 fights...
David Lopez was very poorly managed. Most of those early losses came from fighting in the wrong division, taking fights on short notice, et. The kid has fought everywhere from super-welter to cruiserweight:nono
I consider Cristobal Cruz a Journeyman that became a Titleist. He was 34-11 before he won the IBO Featherweight title and then won the IBF title in his next match.
It's probably a little late in his career for that, but he's certainly a LOT better than his record indicates.
A few guys I've always thought could be serious contenders if they had the ability to quit their day jobs and train full time: Darnell Boone Ossie Duran Tomas Rojas Sebastian Lujan Sam Soliman (though it's probably late for him now) Kali Meehan (same) A couple more recent guys who actually made the journeyman to champ transition were Carita Lopez and Lovemore N'Dou. And another one who's gone from journeyman to contender is Rafal Jackiewicz.
