You didnt answer my question. When has Jones showed less Mental strength at age of 31? Give me an example?
This has only to do with the utter **** that came from the Forrest thread. The pure disrespect to a fantastic fighter like Vernon Forrest against somebody who has proven NOTHING against natural Welterweight's is hysterical. The Joy Boy's really think that he cannot be beaten by anybody at 147-154, even though he won't fight anyone of merit at this weight class.
Indeed, he also won't give a **** about Floyd's punches and he'll be looking to land with intent. A KO is not out of the question. Travis Simms is also a stylistic nightmare for Floyd, even though he's too old now.
Floyd is obviously a pound for pound elite fighter and he's obviously outstanding at 147. His speed, timing, defense, and counter punching aren't something that comes around every day. But compare this version with the 130, 135, and 140 pound version and you have to come to the conclusion that he's lost a step; his speed has decreased and so has his timing. People have him fighting close to even fights with Sugar Ray Leonard and Thomas Hearns. Imagine what they would have done with Ricky Hatton, Carlos Baldomir, and Zab Judah. If Floyd is dropping 4 rounds to Judah and allowing Hatton to close the distance/set the pace of the fight, he wouldn't beat or have close fights with Leonard or Hearns or Duran for that matter. I know he's a great adjuster, but one must put it in perspective when comparing him with these types of greats. At 130, I wouldn't pick anybody over him. At 135, I rate him highly. And at 140, I think he rates very high as well. But at 147, I'd take Cotto and Williams over him currently. I'd also take prime versions of De La Hoya, Forrest, Quartey, Curry, and Benitez over him. Not to mention the Mosley of the first De La Hoya fight. If he wants to prove his percieved "greatness" at welterweight, he must fight Cotto. And Williams (for good measure). If he beats them, he leaves absolutely no doubt. Until then...
After the De La Hoya fight, sues2nd and I both thought Travis Simms would be the guy to beat him at 154 if they ever fought. But I think age has really caught up to him.
I think Mayweather's best weight was 140 and that he's been slowing down a notch since moving up from there. Still, as far as the RJJ comparison goes, he still beat Judah, DLH and Hatton in that time which impresses me just a shade more than what Jones has done at, say, 175 and beyond. In terms of athletic talent i think prime RJ has the edge over Floyd but in terms of overall skill and accomplishments i'm already leaning towards PBF and he's not done yet (unless he spends the rest of his career fighting fights like the DLH rematch which means absolutely zero to me right now).
Roy royally played with his opponents until he had to make a leap back from heavyweight, that's when he was first really questioned by media and boxing fanatics. And that's when he didn't step up to the plate for real. He beat Ruiz and that was an underrated win, but then again, Ruiz wasn't really the best heavyweight out there. Floyd on the other hand, has been receiving fire ever since he opened his mouth in media, and he's never crumbled under the spotlights... so thus far, I have to give it to him, he seems to have a strong mind.
I'm not even sure that he was the best of our era at 135. I mean how does he fair against a guy like mosley prime for prime? I don't think he wins that fight. I will give him credit, he is mentally the toughest guy out there and its amazing how is seems like every guy he steps in there with gets metally worn down against him.
I can't believe a guy who insanely overrates the likes of Calzaghe and Mijares is saying these things.
Until the guy is beaten - stop talking about who can beat him. We can all sit around and say - this guy would beat him or that guy would beat him - but the fact is that no one has beaten him. And honestly - only one person really came close to beating him - other than that - he's pretty much walking to a victory and still maintaining the name "Pretty Boy" at the end of his fights. The arguement is good for conversation - but it doesn't really hold any weight. The way Floyd fights - saftey first - he still looks Unbeatable right now.
Absolutely not better than a prime Jones, not even close really. Jones dealt with fighters Floyd is unimpressive against like they were nothing.
on the money :good Did he make this thread b/c he hugs the nuts of Calzaghe and is envious his man isn't P4P #1? i respect Calzaghe, i'm not a fan, but i have no tendency to try to diminish his accomplishments with stupid threads...
