Wow. These words were uttered by Al Bernstein during the eighth round of Rocky's fight with Antonio Diaz in July of 2003 (not the still-active welterweight Diaz...the super featherweight who retired after this bout...)

Over six years later, and he still hasn't found it. :verysad

This is a situation where he needed the knockout to win. In this case he was able to get it while stuck in second gear. When he's needed it since, in bigger moments, it's eluded him.

Technically skilled and gutsy as they come, Rocky's fatal flaw is that he's just not able to amplify and apparently never will be.

BTW Tune in RIGHT NOW to catch the ending on ESPN Classic :good. Dramatic 10th round coming up!

I think he's ready now. It's taken a long time, but all he needs is one more title shot and I think he can begin a long, long reign. Just give him another chance!

What a brilliant left hook. Short, perfect motion, bit of an incline to land right on the bottom part of the chin. Literally ended a career.

Clearly Rocky has a full kit of tools. He just isn't always that handy. :conf

Juarez finding another gear. He'll do that when Judah finds a brain.

You've pretty summed him up in this thread: all the tools, but no-one willing to deliver them to the workshop.

I just watched this on ESPNC classic knockout, seen it before though. Rocky just always loses to the elite id like to see him fight Luevano or Gamboa. One of the best contenders in boxing to not win a major world title.

He sort of has one in Kalle Sauerland, he's young, bold, ambitious, I think he'll be a great promoter and less conservative than his father.

I say sort of because who knows what bull**** is going on in courts right now with Palle.

He's in the super six, which gives him a good future, but so much of Kessler's time has been wasted.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that Rocky was one of the best contenders to never win a world title but rather he was a decent fighter who, as Bernstein alluded to, never found that gear. He was a guy with an excellent amateur pedigree who was brought along but never turned into the fighter many thought he would be and he was given more than enough opportunities to win a world title. If you wanna talk about strong contenders who never won a major title then you can start with guys like Herol Graham and, if you didn't regard the WBO title as being significant in '91 like most people at the time, Ray Mercer. I don't look at Juarez as being in that category.

...and Juárez never really found it, over the 5+ years remainder of his career, in which he went 2-6. :wall

Arguably maybe in both of the wins, as he did surge late to stop Escalante - and he buckled down and showed urgency to conquer Rene Alvarado, bagging four of the last five rounds clearly on my card (and only narrowly losing the hard-fought eleventh).

Too little too late, though. A legacy of laziness, overall.

In fairness to Juárez, all of his losses when I originally made this very thread had come to elites. Afterwards, though - just one elite (and even he is borderline due to his own persistently nagging flaws - Linares). The rest, good fighters but Juárez had no business losing to most of them even with his time winding down.

Maybe Floyd can help him out get on more gear? I heard he has a lot of IV's.

Rocky's career was such an oddity, He could crank that left like it was nobody's business. Something outside the ring had to have affected his inside performances...smh
