10 rounds on the Balzsay/Sartison undercard. In their first fight last September, Gomez was clearly robbed, though he did put in a very lazy effort and didn't look too disappointed that he didn't get the decision. I thought his heart wasn't in it anymore and that he would retire but he is back and making another go of it. Gomez should get the decision but I would like to see him put more effort in this time. I don't believe he's ranked by any bodies at present and at 38 he hasn't got much time left but it looks like he is making one last go of it and hopefully he can get a couple more big fights, because on his day he is a very good fighter. Universum have Dimitenko, Boytsov, Chagaev and Gomez on their books yet seem reluctant to put any of them in with each other. On the topic of Chagaev I believe he is fighting Billy Zumbrun on the same card (very poor fight IMO) Anyway, WAR GOMEZ :bbb:bbb
Gomez should win but he needs to get in shape and start fighting regularly. It's probably too late but he could have done something in the division.
Gomez got an injury during the fight, and therefore could not use his left hand after a couple of rounds. He had a shoulter operation right after that fight.
First one wasn't a thriller or anything, but it will be interesting to see how it plays out with JC actually using two hands.
I thought Gomez won fight 1, Tough to call. Glad a journeyman got his 15 mins of fame. Gomez wins UD IMO, Wilson durable.
I hear a poor decision gives a win to Gomez. I havent seen the fight but was told it was about even (Ding dropped Gomez in the third!) when headclash cut Ding badly - and the ref erroneously ruled that a punch had done the damage and crowned Gomez the winner. I wonder if there is a fair appeal process for ding or if that would just be pissing against the wind.
I don't think they've ever put any of their own heavyweights in the ring together. That would just get one of them knocked off. Their strategy is probably to have each heavyweight gun for a different world title belt. If that works out, then Universum's profits -- as sole promoters of multiple world champs -- would be maximized. I heard that Universum may be hurting these days. I don't know if they've recovered from their financial crisis yet. Dmitrenko is vulnerable. Gomez is aging and hedonistic. Chagaev is probably in the terminal stage of his career. Boytsov's prospects are very iffy, leaning toward negative.
Entirely predictable. The Germans are hometown decision experts. I doubt that Ding has a viable appeals process. Whoever organization oversees German boxing is probably tight with a big German promoter like Universum. Interestingly, this is the second time in 2 years that Ding has been TKO'd because of a cut caused by a headbutt. I heard the same thing happened against Jason Galvern a while ago.
