This is one of the more intriguing heavyweight fights out there, scheduled for September 27, with the winner setting themselves up nicely for a title shot. Former cruiserweight great Gomez has been on a nice run at HW since completely falling off the wagon vs Yanqui Diaz 4 years ago for his only loss, and Virchis, who's one of the biggest punchers in the sport, has gotten back on track in his last few fights since his only defeat, a close decision loss against Chagaev. I'm thinking Gomez still has enough to win a UD, but with Virchis' punch, it wouldn't shock me whatsoever to see Vlad spark him. Who ya got? :think
gomez. sadly got sidelined when he was jumped on by diaz. he dominates his man with a precise, calm paced, jab and move, southpaw style. he can also pack a punch when he needs to. virchis to me doesnt impress me. nice right cross and a booming left hook. but he was cearly defenceless against a michal sprott jab. add into the equation this is a 6'3 southpaw with a damn good jab and not a 5'11 out of prime not so talented non jabber. also the chagaev fight was a showing of how a tecnically sound fighter can out manuva and out hustle virchis. weak chin questions i dont know but
Good thread and intriguing matchup. The thing is with a big power puncher fighting its always the same. In order for Gomez to win he's gotta fight a perfect fight and not get hit at all. Virchis has a good chin and if he connects he will easily KO Gomez. Virchis has room for error Gomez does not. Remember Gomez was KO'ed by Yanqui Diaz! Betting wisdom would put money on Virchis.
[yt]e7cUUwIQXd4[/yt] true he was stopped in the first round. but there are few factors that virches doesnt have and thats fluidity. he doesnt throw combo's just boomers. it's the countershot thats get you and virches i dotn think has it in his reportoire to catch him. virchis is not a swarmer. but please prove me wrong i have little love for gomez
Virchis is extremely slow and has had alot of trouble previously with even decent boxers. I expect Gomez will utilise his jab and footwork to outbox his opponent, making sure not to get caught by any big punches. Virchis' only hope is to catch Gomez with a big punch, something I don't think will happen. Gomez UD
Gomez UD, Virchis can certainly hit but the Chagaev fight should've been a clean UD loss and the Sprott 'win' remains a controversial one. If Virchis could loosen up some and apply some effective pressure then he could win out. Instead I get the feeling he'll be looking for the one big shot all the time as Gomez straight rights and jabs his way to a point decision.
I would imaging Gomez outboxes him easily. Virchis has not impressed me at all, and as has already been stated, he has had a lot of trouble with good boxers of late. Gomez is a superb boxer.
