Wait, so Nava unified super bantamweight tonight?

Why didn't she have the WBA belt on the line here? :huh

Concepcion is the most exciting fighter on the planet. He's getting matched up with the best box-puncher so I'll sleep well at night. It's also a fairly quick turnaround (November). So we can still get Gonzalez-Estrada II in 2015 Spring or Summer. I pray.

These type of fights always make me nervous cause **** happens.
Remember the Chavez vs Norris talks building up steam only to suddenly stopped on their tracks by Simon Brown. More recently Canelo/Cotto. At one point it almost seemed like a done deal right now it's very iffy.

I was sure the Estrada vs Segura fight was going to be an absolute war. But instead, it was an absolutely one-sided beatdown from beginning to end. Although a few rounds were relatively close, Estrada clearly won all 10 completed rounds, and he was dominating the 11th before the stoppage. Estrada took control of the fight in the 1st round, landing several hard, straight punches to the head; Segura was clearly affected, as his legs became stiff and wobbly, and his footwork was awful, constantly switching stances from southpaw to squared to orthodox and back again. From the 2nd round onwards, Segura looked like he was struggling, maybe even fatigued, and he seemed to be throwing mostly arm punches, looping and wide; while he caught Estrada flush several times during the fight, Estrada was never remotely buzzed, and he never seemed to show any particular respect for Segura's power. In contrast, Estrada's punches were straight and powerful, he hurt Segura numerous times, and he literally knocked him around the ring throughout the fight; at least 6-8 times during the fight, he knocked Segura 10 feet backwards with his punches. Segura sustained a lot of facial damage, his right eye and face were badly swollen, and his right mandible was almost certainly fractured. By the end of the 8th round, which was one of Estrada's most dominant rounds, when clearly there was no way back in the fight for Segura, I thought the fight should have been stopped, or at most, the referee should have warned Segura's corner that he would allow only one more round. But there seems to be no room for this in Mexican boxing culture, and so of course Segura's corner kept putting him out there, until finally in the 11th round, Estrada had a final flurry of power punches that knocked Segura into a corner, near enough down and certainly defenseless, so finally the referee stepped in to stop the fight.

I think the major story coming out of this fight is what this performance means for Segura going forward. He is 32 years old, and now has had 37 professional fights and 185 professional rounds, which does not seem like so many, even for a fighter in one of the lower weight classes. However, he lacks refined boxing and defensive skills, and has been in a number of absolute wars, including Viloria, Sosa, and Marquez just within the past 3 years. Maybe it all has caught up with him. Regardless, I think Estrada still deserves a lot of credit for this victory, and together with Roman Gonzalez, he certainly is one of the top two flyweights in the world right now. A Gonzalez vs Estrada rematch, which would unify three of the four major world flyweight title belts, would be one of the best fights that could be made in boxing nowadays.

A mans will and spirit are usually the last to go and i guess we saw shades of that in Segura tonight.

Great post. I love Segura because of what he did to Calderon. Twice. He's a very articulate and sincere guy. I've seen several long interviews with him and he's so well-spoken he sounds like a scholar and not a boxer. I think it may be time to hang 'em up. I don't want him to be rendered useless because of unnecessary wars.
