I'm puerto rican, but I have to say that since I saw Juanma fight Penalosa, I've been saying that he was a KO waiting to happen. He has great power but that's it. No jab No head movement average speed and chin leaky defence and he eats too many right hands. I'm not happy that he lost, but I feel that he's always been vastly overrated.
The lack of head movement is part of his leaky defense. I dont' agree at all that he has average speed and chin. He has very fast hands and a sturdy chin. He just takes too many flush shots. His problem is that he got away from what got him to the top, which was his superior boxing abilities. He started relying solely on his power and it finally cost him. Who knows if he can ever get back to the way he was, with all the punishment he's taken. But I dont' think he was ever overrated. He had all the tools, he just fell in love with his power and got away from everything else.
I agree, with most of it. But contrary to what the ts says, I actually think he fought fine against Penalosa, the problem was he kept fighting like that against people that could actually hurt him.
The poor guy can't see his kids neither, he may say it don't affect him but we all know mentally that can mess u bad
This is exactly what I posted after that fight Penalosa. Juanma began to regress during and after that fight. Where has his ring generalship gone? Now he is just a guy who stands in front of his opponent with no regard for distance or head movement and throws punches. And he has lost hand speed. He looked as slow as Salido. Hopefully he can get his **** together. He isn't a bad fighter but he has been fighting for several fights now, very inconsistently and I would poorly. And that is NOT even considering this fight at all.
I just watched that fight today. JuanMa has a ton of heart and some good power, but that's about it. It's not a good combo when you have chin issues, and are also slow and have no defense. He seemingly has no survival skills either. He gets rocked and then decides it's a good idea to leave himself open and throw sloppy punches. Now it looks like he's going to have to move up in weight. That means bigger guys who are better equipped to deal with his power.
He fell in love with his power and his marriage issues done him in. Maybe weight issues. I think he can win a rematch.
I think we saw the same Juan ma as the last few fights. The difference being that salido has a durable chin and decent defense. Also, Juan was very surprise by that looping right hand, powerful and sneaky.
I totally agree. I posted a thread about this. He has been going downhill ever since the Lontchi fight. He's not a fast boxer anymore, and he has been steadily disappointing.
Don't get me wrong I'm not saying he's a bad fighter, I'm just saying that maybe he's not the superstar many people claimed that he was, or was going to be.
Maybe, but when a puncher is figured out by an intelligent boxer(puncher), things usually get worse in the rematch. I don't think at all Lopez should meet Salido again. Orlando came out with a plan, tagged JuanMa with flush overhand rights over and over again, mixed it up not to get too predictable and rolled and slipped most of what was coming back, if you watch the fight from Salido's standpoint you'll see a very complete performance inluding body shots and other long-term investments to break Lopez down. It is highly problematic in boxing if your puzzle is solved, and the only way for JuanMa to avoid another loss is to make serious changes in defense and offense - that or simply avoid a hard hitting high IQ fighters such as Salido who finds holes and punish you for that, see the Gamboa fight. It was NOT an easy win by any means for the Cuban. A rematch would be unwise IMO, another loss would practically end Lopez's career where fighting someone not possessing the required punch, chin and smarts can take Lopez to another title, but that might happen at another weight.
Personally...I don't believe that these are his major issues. From what I have seen....Juanma gets into these SLUG-FEST with lesser opponents (Penalosa, Mtagwa and even Salido) and all of the previously mentioned flaws of Juanma become evident because he's standing toe-2-toe Slugging with fighters in which he has all the advantages...Taller, Longer Reach and a Southpaw. Why he continues to do this....Just makes NO SENSE. In fact, all the recent Boricuas get caught-up in these Slug-Fest Juanma, Cotto, and Tito. I think Camacho was the last Boricua that Boxed and Boxed WELL!!! Cotto has one of the Best Jabs in the Sport....but always ends-up getting into these SLUG-FEST. I Just don't get it:-(.
