Looks like Juan Manuel Marquez has all of a sudden become a 'old, completely shot fighter' according to some boxing fans.

Amir Khan is likely to face JMM on May 15th.

I did a poll earlier on who would people prefer Amir Khan to face.

68% preferred Khan to face Marcos Maidana.
19% preferred Khan to face Juan Manuel Marquez
13% preferred Khan to face Malignaggi

Now it's obvious people are ranting because they wanted to see Amir Khan face Maidana (As did I). But let's think about it..

Marcos Maidana has a punchers chance. Let's say we did see this fight. Throughout the fight. We would see Khan mostly on the defensive, using the jab like never before. - IMO, a boring display.

Now let's go on to JMM, a skilled warrior who has just faced the P4P fighter, Floyd Mayweather at Welterweight (147 Pounds). That was 2 weight divisions higher than the weight he was fighting at before. Come on, did people honestly expect JMM to carry up the reflexes, speed and power up to WW? I honestly didn't and knew that the fight with PBF would be a mismatch.

And now he faces Khan at 140, everyone suddenly jumps on Khan saying he's fighting old shot fighters? No one said anything when Floyd Mayweather fought him! Geez, give Amir a break, he only got knocked out four fights ago! - And I wanted to see Maidana-Khan just as much as you guys but is JMM really not a viable opponent for the 23 year old Khan?

IMO, JMM has much more of a chance of Schooling/Knocking out Khan than Maidana.

So give the guy a break. He'll hit the big challenges very soon! I'm sure of it.

There is more chance of Marquez making Khan look rubbish IMO

I wanted to see the Maidana fight but have no complaints against Khan fighting Marquez.

No big deal as far as I'm concerned. JMM is still a very worthy opponent, especially one as young as Khan looking to step up. His jump up in weight may be an issue, but who knows. As for PBF, he did receive plenty pf criticism.

JMM is not shot...but cleary past his best. And at 140 or above he might as well be shot. The speed, size, power and reflexes will be Khans advantage. Sure JMM is crafty but being smaller, slower, older and less powerful will not give him much of a shot to beat Khan.

Where has he been described as shot ?

Plenty of people ( including a big article in Ring mag ) criticized mayweather for taking the Marquez fight

What Feather / Super feathers are still at their best at 36 ?

Yeah he faced Floyd at 147 but got so outclassed as to be made to look amatuerish at times

I was one of those who said I'd rather see him fight another young champion so go read my post and tell me where I called Marquez old and shot

Khan was KOed four fights ago , so ****ing what , he has a belt round his waist saying World Champion on it now !

Whilst JMM may not be that same guy who beat Casamayor and Diaz.....I still think Khan is taking a massive risk in fight him.

Just the other day, someone made a very good point about Khan and his best asset (speed). Against the likes of Kotelnik, yes he looks untouchable with his lightning combinations and quick movement. But what happens when he comes across a guy who can neutralize his quick hands? JMM is that guy! We saw how he handled Pacquiao, and we definately know he has the tools to handle Khan.

IMO, Khan will be taken in to deep deep waters.

You're the one who started the thread , there a good few people ( me included ) saying he is past hsi best , I haven't seen one saying SHOT

He is a world champ at 140 Pounds and your saying that fighting a guy who fought ONCE at the weight and got an absolute one sided tanking, when there are other guys at the weight , with belts , who want to fight is the best way to go.

I like Amir I want him to be a british hero and lay waste to the division but this fight just reminds me of the barrera debacle ( but I gues youre going to tell me that was peak barrera too ?)

I think this is a bad match up for Khan, one bad fight against Mayweather and people quickly forget. I think JMM wins this by TKO in the 8th/9th round.

I don't see it going any other way!

If you are going to post on generalities and cast a large net expect people to point out they don't feel that way.

It is fairly clear that 'fans' have described JMM as being a fighter who is getting long in the tooth for a while now. Yes he overcame Casa (who was older than him) and Diaz with his technical prowess and in the case of Diaz his strong will but that doesn't make everyone blind to the fact that he's been living off this technique for a while now as his body is now longer as quick or as strong.

Everyone who wasn't a hardcore Floyd fan were aware JMM vs PBF was a huge mismatch both physically (he's older and smaller) but also PBF is overall a better technical fighter (offense is probably only thing you can give to JMM).

If you define being shot as being on the down side of your career then yeah JMM is shot. If being shot means being no longer able to perform at a level that makes you competitive then I'd say no JMM is not shot.

JMM is past it but not shot and Khan's a little big for him but I see him taking Khan out.
