I think Marquez is quite possibly one of the most talented fighters of his generation, in a very very very deep feather division he was one of the best. I watched his whole career from fight 9 on, and he was polished at world champion level by his 14th fight. I didn't have him down in any of his fights, I thought he won the Norwood fight, and he looked SOLID, and did not get a chance to fight for the belt again for years, then unified belts in his second championship event against Smoke Gainer, and then ... came the first pac fight. In my mind Marquez should have been undefeated, his early dq loss was for knocking the guy out after the bell after knocking him down three or four times. And Pac almost shut him out in one round. Marquez is great, and he is on the decline now. He was world class from the time of his twentieth fight, he should have beat Norwood, he should have beat John, and he should have lost twice to Pac, and the most ineffective he ever looked was against ... Mayweather, the only time he has looked helpless in the ring. He is in the twilight of his career and his prime was spent without a title shot, but he is an amazing fighter ... who deserves two losses to Pac.
More importantly, what was Marquez doing at 15? Barrera was making his professional debut. What was Marquez doing in 2000? Probably fighting Robbie Peden, whereas Barrera and Morales were beating the ever-loving **** out of each-other in arguably the greatest fight ever filmed. Just sayin'.
Well I guess they blew thier load of careers in that fight because clearly Marquez is better at this stage in his career. He has been #2-3 p4p for how long? Where are Barrera and Morales on the p4p list?
Marquez was fighting tough second tier opponents his entire career and did not get the title shots, where "members only" bs was playing out, because it was clear as day his skill set was high risk low reward. I don't buy that for many guys, but I buy it from Winky Wright, for Marquez, and guys like that.
Where was Juan Manuel Marquez on the P4P lists in 1996? Where was he on the P4P lists through 2000-2002? You're not getting this are you? You can easily attribute JMM's longevity to the level of competition he was routinely fighting prior to 2003. Likewise, MAB turned professional four years before Marquez did at the very young age of 15. You getting this now...or?
He did not get another title shot after Norwood for YEARS. He wanted one, obviously, he just couldn't get it.
He was Hamed's mandatory for eons. No champion wanted to give him a shot at the title and instead chased more lucrative and better known fighters who presented less risk, and this is exactly what Hagler faced in his career, but once he got the belt he proved he deserved it. I feel Marquez has more or less done the same thing, even though he got beaten by Pac in my opinion. Twice.
Yeah, the circumstances for why he was fighting lesser opponents to his Mexican counterparts is actually irrelevant, I'm just trying to explain why Barrera and Morales aren't operating at a higher level today. It's not because they aren't as good or as great as JMM, it's because they were fighting better opposition earlier on, and in the case of Barrera, he was fighting many years before Marquez even turned professional.
fair enough. I think marco and erik edge him in accomplishments too, but I think this featherweight era with those three and pac is THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME. I don't care what anyone says, all four of those guys are awesome, who just happened to shine at different points in their careers.
The only one I remember actually going down on the end of a punch was Juan Manuel Marquez, and it's been well documented that MAB was at the tail-end of his career, whereas Marquez was only really in the process of amounting some memorable victories. A pretty good win, but nothing to set him apart from the "Very Good" fighters of the last decade and a half.
