Cortez is slipping anyway. He is inconsistent.

Bayless or Smoger should be the third man in the ring.

No, all I'm getting is conspiracy. It's BS Chimba and you seem to be looking for a pre-determined excuse. If you're insinuating that they allowed the Pacquiao-MAB decision to be fair only because they could make alot of money promoting the fight between JMM and Pacquiao, and didn't want to lose it, then tell me this.....if making more money later on potentially was the motive, why not fix Cotto-Mosley, so that they could have a mega fight with Mosley vs Mayweather?

All this bickering in this forum over a Marquez not wanting Cortez to ref the fight......

.....Personally I dont think the ref is going to matter anyway, these two guys pretty much fight a clean fight.

If JMM has a concern over Cortez because of his work in his past fights, its good that he points that out now so that the commision is forewarned that the JMM camp is unaccepting of Cortez.

It Pac has an issue with a ref, he can address such issues too.

Btw, imo Pac is pretty much a clean fighter. He hit JMM while he was down, but I dont think he had the evil intentions that MAB did vs JMM.
.....Marquez was holding on to the ropes with a glove on the canvas, either one is considered being down, but it all happened so fast, and in the heat of battle, sometimes a fighter instinctively is not sure whether a fighter is down or not......
In any regards, a point deduction I believe was merited. Marquez got hit while he was down, but if Cortez felt that a point deduction was'nt merited, I think he was wrong, but considering the circumstance in which JMM was partially down....I dont think Cortez should be crucified for it.
It may be that Cortez looked at JMM and decided that a point deduction was'nt merited in that the punch did'nt further hurt JMM to the point that it would handicap him.
Bad call, but I'll forgive Cortez for it, these guys have to make a bang bang decision which is'nt easy sometimes.

this is quite a story :think

    cortez saved jmms ass by
    1. counting too long
    2. saved jmms ass again even though he was disoriented thinking he was in lala land .
    3. even though no 3 ko in effect, still let jmm box eventhough he was acting like a ballerina during the final seconds.....

what a reverse tactic by the jmm camp :yep :yep

    1. that wasn't a long count, for long counts, please see pac versus skinny hussein

    2. jmm was hurt but was in a state where he was willing and able to continue

    3. he let jmm box and look what happend, he beat pac for most of the match. he was acting like a ballerina because he thought he did enough to win ergo, he did not want to catch another punch that could kd/ko him.

    all points invalid.

Well there then.....it was Pac who was at a disadvantage with Cortez as the ref, you should be happy that JMM is taking the side of Pac and saying "I'll school Pac any which way, and I'll tell you what, I dont need Cortez doing me any favors!"

Be happy then Johnco, from your accounts JMM is doint Pac a favor by not wanting Joe Cortez as the referee!:yep

I`ve always regarded Joe Cortez as being an overly officious referee, and I for one do not want him to be in charge of reffereeing this fight. A referee`s job is to stay out of the way and try to be as invisible as possible and let the fighters fight, not to make himself the centre of attention by constantly breaking the fighters concentration by seperating them as soon as they get close to one another.

He doesn`t let fighters fight it out on the inside as he constantly breaks them apart, when in-fighting is a part of boxing which he is obviously not familiar with. It is almost as if he pounces on the opportunity to say something into the microphone so that us, the viewers don`t forget that he is there as third man in the ring.

Either way, for the sake of this fight I hope they go with a ref who will not make a spectacle of himself and will let the fighters fight, period. Cortez is definately not the man for the job, I would go with Steve Smoger or Kenny Bayless here, those two only get involved if an infraction has to be penalized or has to be called, other than that they stay the heck out of the way which is what a referee should do at all times.

Steve Smoger is a famous American

He works exclusively on the East Coast, and is often featured as the referee in world title or major fights taking place at East Coast venues. When Smoger is not refereeing fights, he serves as a Municipal Court Judge in Atlantic City, as well as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force Reserves.

In boxing circles, Smoger is known as being one of the most lenient referees in the sport. This liberal attitude often results in exciting fights as the action is only broken up when it is absolutely necessary.

Aside from his excellence as a referee, Smoger is also known for being the victim in the "chair incident" which took place during the

The argument is not that Cortez should have stopped the fight, obviously he made the right choice by letting it go on. The argument is that if Cortez wanted to stop it because he doesn't like Marquez, he could have after the 3rd knockdown, and very few people (if any) would have complained.

Since he didn't, it basically shows that Cortez has no beef with Marquez.

so if Marquez wants a different ref than Cortez because he feels that Cortez is incompetent then thats all good but all his whining about Cortez holding a personal grudge against him is just straight up WEAK.

I don't see the reason why he should of had stopped it. If anything mp should of gotten a point deduction for hitting jmm while he was on the canvas. For those who say how was manny supposed to know his glove was touch'n the floor, he's not the referee that was Cortez's job to had called that. If he would of the cards would of been a lil different.

That would have pissed off Pac even more. You know what happens when you **** off Pac. Pac would have knocked JMM through the ropes.

Has anybody ever seen a point deduction when a guy was getting his ass handed to him? sh*t happens. JMM shouldn't be clinging on to the ropes for dear life. Pac did what he had to do..make sure he stays on the ground. LOL.
