Juan Manuel Marquez should contune his careeer at 140/147.

140 would be great. Whatever's best for him is good enough for me as a fan, but he's definitely able to take on one or two highly-ranked champions or contenders like Bradley, Khan, Maidana, and likely win impressively. I'd just hate to see him retire thinking about all he could do at lightweight (if feasible), junior-welterweight, or even against a few welterweights that aren't too big.

 

He should campaign at 140...could be interesting if he fights the winner of berto/ortiz 2 at 147

Marquez should just settle in at 140. So many great fights for him there. The only fight i wanted to see him do at 135 was Rios but i feel Rios is gonna be moving up soon anyway. Rios, Khan or Maidana and ill cream my pants.

Rios and Soto would be good. I think he's looking for the best paydays. Soto probably wouldn't give it to him, but a number of fighters at 140 could do it for him. Morales is shot but some would buy it; a fight with Maidana is a guaranteed sell; Khan would be a huge-fight...it's a tough matchup but JMM could still pull it off; Bradley would be a great win on his record and is more easily winnable; Guerrero is still a champion at lightweight and might make the move to 140 soon...just one or two of these would be a real treat.

Another bum? Have you seen JMM's lightweight run? It started right around the time Pac moved up to fight Oscar so I guess you'd be around...anyways, with a vast majority of people seeing JMM as the true winner of their last fight, Marquez has little to gain by wasting his time and efforts on another unfavorable decision.

I think he should definitely fight at 140. He would have all kinds of great matchups available. I think he should NOT fight at or near 147 unless it's for a Pacquiao fight. The physical disadvantages would be too much to overcome.

 

That kind of bum was a one-off tune-up fight inconsistent with the rest of JMM's great resume. You used the plural "bums".

He may lose out on another pay-day, but if it was all about the money he'd be spouting **** through the media about how he won the first fight (a sentiment a vast majority of viewers agree with) and hounding Pac for a rematch. He wants to be able to fight without getting overlooked by biased or corrupt judges. He's sitting pretty on a Mexican promotional firm, millions earned over the span of an 18 year career, and a history in accounting.

I think the warrior in Marquez would rather ride into the sunset with the scalps of a few young champions, rather than replicate the same feat so many already attribute to him at the risk of getting no official recognition for money he doesn't need at this age and stage of his career. He might very well retire and enjoy his life and family, and there would be no shame in that.

 

Would people then consider the winner a true 4 division champ?

 

Completely disagree with this. A Marquez-Morales fight would be nice for the fans, but the gulf in class between the two (even with Morales looking "not as bad" as he did pre-layoff) makes it difficult for me to attach such meaning to that bout in 2011 or 2012.
