A good meaty Featherweight clash, One I'd love to have seen . And the classic 15 rounds ,so who takes it ?
Marquez, McGuigan’s style would give him plenty of opportunities to counter. McGuigan was really good, but just like Buchanan’s wins over Laguna the over-egging of the quality of Barry’s win over Pedroza by British press has lost the true narrative: world class fighters beat past-their-best legends quite frequently. And McGuigan was a few steps below Buchanan, who absolutely would beat Marquez at 135 IMO (taking prime Marquez not cutting any weight in Ken’s era of course) So yeah, stylistically McGuigan isn’t JMM’s nemesis, which tended to be those that would force him to lead. Fun fight though I’m sure.
Yes and there`s no way McGuigan would be rated as highly as Buchannan by Duran who stated in the ring magazine-best I`ve ever faced series that Buchannan was the best fighter in most departments compared to all his opponents. McGuigan never faced anyone as good as Duran and Marquez would have been by far the best fighter he would have fought.
I see it as a good very tough fight with JMM taking a close UD. Prime Barry always gets undersold here
I think people underestimate Barrys strength and conditioning. Funny because Marquez lost to Norwood. I think Barrys pressure would trouble Marquez and his strength as well.
While he wasn’t elite McGuigan was a very good fighter, he’s become underrated on here. He was extremely strong, had good upper body and head movement, had a very high output with decent power and was a vicious body puncher. This would be no walk in the park for Marquez who however I would expect to win a fairly close UD with his better all round game and toughness.
He can't win on here because the competition they put him against is always a step above him, I rate Barry as middle ranked type of fighter, just missing being Elite and well above the lower ranks, finding himself somewhere in the middle. This would mean he most likely loses against all the Elite name fighters we usually discuss in these forums, but putting him on an even bar with many other ones, I place him in the Ray Mancini category and rankings in their respective divisions.
