Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Erik Morales pushing forward for April 9th in Las Vegas......

    Time is precious for Mexican legend Juan Manuel Marquez these days. At 37 years of age the three-division champion isn't in the mood to hear any kind of banter regarding retirement talk, as he fully plans to close out his career with as much of a bang as possible. Marquez is coming off of a thrilling 9th round stoppage of Michael Katsidis in which he was floored in the third round before recovering to show that he still has plenty of moxie left in him.
    It's no secret that the fight Marquez desires most is a third clash with Filipino Manny Pacquiao, whom he fought to a spirited draw in May of 2004 and lost a heated split decision almost four years later, but the two men are simply in different lanes at the moment. Looking for as lucrative of an alternative as possible, Marquez now seems all but set to face off with once-great Tijuana brawler Erik Morales in a bout that features two men with great names despite some diminished skills thrown in the bag as well.

    Their had been whispers of the fight coming off soon after the Katsids scuffle but it seemed to be up in the air earlier this month as Marquez initially failed to pin 'El Terrible' as his foe, with financial terms seeming to be part of the problem as well as the proud champion's motives towards facing other opposition.


    While there were question marks for a brief moment it now appears that Marquez and Morales have both signed on for the fight, which will take place on April 9th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Speaking to Jose Antonio Soriano at ***********.com, Morales' father and trainer Joe gave his thoughts.

    "I'm glad that we came to a successful conclusion in our negotiations to carry out this fight," a relieved Morales stated. "Hopefully both fighters give it a good show and a great fight for the fans. I know that both Erik and Juan Manuel will arrive in perfect condition on the day of the fight. I will do my best for my child to win."

    Despite Marquez holding titles at the lightweight division the bout will take place at 140 pounds, with the WBC's Diamond Belt on the line. Morales is expected to begin training later this week at the Otomi Ceremonial Center in Temoaya, Mexico for the contest.

    why the **** is the fight at 140lbs??

    I don't reckon we see Khan vs Bradley this year. Bradley is a free again, can sign with Top Rank and win the Manny sweepstake. GBP need a PPV fight, Marquez vs Khan is that.

    Morales can't make 135, he must have heavy bones. JMM is done with 135 and needs to look to new challenges and pay days.

    This fight couldn't make more sense for the fighters. Morales gets another shot and JMM gets paid to put a demon to rest, in a similar fashion to Lewis vs Tyson.

    JMM will say he is the best Mexican of his era (arguable) and he'll look for a 4th division blah blah blah

    Not an incredible fan fight in terms of quality but JMM is coming off of 2 great wins and if he wants to find his weight at 140 vs a legend then he can make a pay day.

    JMM will look to slot himself into the Khan, Bradley, Alexander, Maidana mix.

    Because one combatant is probably the 2nd best fighter in the sport right now..... and the other is a shadow of his former self, with zero form above 130lbs.

    Khan would get slaughtered for taking this fight at 140 as would countless others not rated P4P top 5.

    JMM seems to be above criticsm for some.

    Marquez-Katsidis II would be about 10 times more competitive than this. Hell, so would Marquez-Murray.

    I love JMM but he's a ******* for this.

    Morales deserved the nod over David Diaz, at 135. not much but it is some form, altho it was a while ago i know

    Besides...since then Diaz has gone tooth and nail with guys who were average (Montano, Frenkel) and past-it (Chavez) and barely scraped by all three with majority decisions. He's been beaten emphatically by the two higher-level fighters he's seen in that time.

    As for Morales, he's looked progressively worse since that last gasp (which, let's not forget...came after submitting to Pacquiao in the rubbermatch and proving that he was shot to bits even then). If you didn't see his bout with the decidedly ordinary Lorenzo...it was a borderline robbery.

    This will be a slaughter.

    Old past prime JMM at a weight above his max level (135) imo.

    vs

    Not so old Morales at a weight that helps him but shot.
