Marquez vs Erik Morales in their prime who would win? ive heard whisperings that Morales wasnt exactly keen on fighting Marquez maybe because at the time that Morales was in his prime and Marquez at the time wasnt a big draw at all so to much risk for little reward. But anyway the fight in my opinion Marquez would win a ud due to his superb counter punching and placement of shots and i think Morales would be the perfect opponent for him to show of his skills. However im a massive Marquez fan so that would make me biased and admittedly havent seen a lot of Morales apart from Barrera and Pac-Man fights and from what ive seen he would fall victim to Marquez's counter punching, what do you guys think?

I'd lean towards Marquez, he's the technician and better puncher of the 2. It would be a close 1 though no doubt

Morales by UD... he has the better jab, is at least as fast, hits a little harder, better footwork, better chin, more comfortable in a brawl & was a far busier fighter as well as being a great counter-puncher himself.

Watch him vs guys like Ayala & Hernandez, the man was a complete fighter, a class act of the highest order... I think he beats Marquez on points, possibly scoring a KD along the way without recieving 1 in reply.

    Cheers !

You see ive never been a Morales fan (always supported Barrera over him) and for me he definetly didnt fancy fighting Marquez at all, as i said earlier it maybe because Marquez wasnt a big enough name but thats true up until about 2003 so they couldve fought. Plus i dont agree his footwork was better + he did have skill but he preferred a tear up and for this reason i believe he was made for Marquez to beat

Im sorry i have 2 go for morales winning this one. i do see marquez getting floored on the way to a tough hard fought decision win for morales. interesting match-up of two great mexican fighters.

I've heard these two were quite good friends outside of the ring.

I tend to agree with you Jack for similar reasons. In fact, I've recently developed a bit of weird, self-righteous feeling about this one. Great fighter though Morales was with a nigh on unquestionable level of career opponents, I think that he was a bit lucky in a certain regard having not come across more really elite level counterpunchers outside of Barrera (who got the better of him over their trilogy cleanly enough imo). There's just something about that sometimes slightly rigid/mechanical style that - in spite the sharp offensive tools - plants a touch of doubt in the old grey matter when it comes to Morales handling the best movers and counterpunchers. Now Marquez doesn't have Pep-like footwork, but neither did Morales and Marquez on his best form at 126 was a good bit harder to hit cleanly than the current old man is. He wouldn't have to go looking for Morales even if the latter opted to box a bit more conservatively than usual, and although Morales' sharpness and relative shortness of punch could see him land plenty of his own stuff (and maybe landing an early knockdown), his leaky defence probably finds Marquez timing, poise and technique running through it more often than the other way around.

Great fight though with Marquez probably winning 8-4ish in my book.

3 keys as to why Marquez wins......quickness, speed, and conditioning.........all three of which imo Marquez was vastly superior to Morales in.

......you look at everyone of Morales' fights with the elites, MAB and Pacquiao, and he was never the fresher guy in the championship rounds.

Marquez wins a fairly comfortable UD.

If he has both the quickness and the speed though, what about his proneness toward rapidity and fastness? Will these things too work in his favor? This, I cannot help but wonder. Also his tendency to be anti-decelerated.

this fight could actually be happening if marquez doesn't get a third chance at pac. right now marquez would win but it'd be fun for however long it lasted. prime for prime, i might lean towards morales but i'm not real confident in my prediction.
