Have you ever heard of the old adage "styles make fights"? Because in this matchup it sertainly applies. Even if you think JMM is the greater fighter, stylistically Famechon is all wrong for him.

 

Raging Bull, you know Sanchez is my boy but in the past I've singled out Marcel and Pedroza as possible foils for Sanchez (although I'm not going as far as saying they beat him. Sal always found a way.). I could see Famechon being trouble too. I've only seen Marcel twice against Duran and Arguello. In those two fights he seemed to be hurt and/or gas badly at some point in the fight. Was that a trait of his or more based on who he was in with?

To not get totally off track, I'd say Marquez is greater than Famechon but agree this could be the worst possible style matchup for him. I'd favor Famechon.

Why is Marquez a better fighter in the first place? Stylistically Famechon is a foil for him, but I don't believe Marquez would've been any more successful than Famechon in that era anyway.

 

i just think marquez is a great fighter who would be in the top 5 at his weight in any era

 

I think he'd lose to Saldivar, Winstone, Legra, Famechon, and Ramos of that particular era, as well as a young Laguna and older version of Jofre and Harada.

Marquez is a very good fighter, one of the best Featherweights of the era, but I think calling him great is a step too far, especially in comparison with all of the past Featherweights.

 

If you have seen twelve Marquez fights and perhaps only two of Famechon's, then it's perfectly feasible to be more impressed with Marquez. Especially if the brief footage you viewed of Famechon wasn't convincing and impressive enough to have him over a superb techinican like Marquez. If a DVD career set of Famechon was as readily available as whats on offer regarding Marquez things could be absored more fully.

It's human nature.

Reading books and carefully studying a fighters record to evaluate him is one thing, but it's only part of the jigsaw.

That fight against Willie Pep was Ray Famechon, the uncle of Johnny Famechon.
Ray Famechon was a very decent fighter in his own right.

 

Yeah, that was definitely not Johnny Famechon that fought Willie Pep, that was before than Johnny's time. Based on that, I'm pretty sure you're bullshitting about having seen multiple Johnny Famechon fights outside of the highlights sweet_scientist just posted.
