Juan Manuel Marquez vs Prince Naseem Hamed

Every single time Marquez goes down and the other guy tries to finish him they get killed, you see it time and time again.

I honestly think this would be Naseems undoing, he would get a flash KD early on and his finishing instinct would kick in and it would get him destroyed.

 

Marquez was offered a career high purse after several other fighters (Tapia, Barrera and, according to HBO, Morales) all turned down offers to fight Hamed in the summer of 2000.Hamed had a date of August and had absolutely no intention of fighting any earlier, and Marquez rejected this fight in May of 2000.

I'm not going to bother with this crap, its common knowleadge Hamed avoided and had no intention of climbing a ring to fight Marquez.

 

Not the only time Marquez turned down a career payday for an easier fight.

 

This is true.Ive forgotten the name of the Mexican Hamed vacated the title rather than defend against,because he "wasn't enough of a name".Never went anywhere near Morales,either,for obvious reasons.Must admit,I enjoyed his run,he was great to watch.Fought some top fighters,but most were slightly past their best.Including Kevin Kelly.Only slightly past it IMO,but just enough for Naz to scrape past{great fight!}For me Hameds best win.
As a Brit,I was far more disappointed by Amir Khans loss to Garcia than Nazs loss to MAB.Mainly because of the personality difference,and the fact that I won a bit of money on Marco.

 

Hamed is not winning a decision against Marquez and it's highly unlikely that he stops him given what we've seen Marquez come back from. The conservative call is it takes Marquez a round or two to adjust to Hamed's style and athleticism, where he possibly gets dropped but recovers, then he systematically destroys Hamed after that. Either wins by clear decision or late stoppage catching Hamed leaping in.

No, it's not true; if it was, he would have actually attempted to refute my post, but he made absolutely no effort to do so.

 

The 21 year old Naseem Hamed that beat Steve Robinson would have beaten any featherweight on the planet.The guy that fought Barrera was just a shell of the fighter Nas used to be.He peaked way to early imo and lost his love for the sport which is a shame because I do believe he could been an ATG.

 

It's a bit of a stretch that Hamed would have beaten anyone at that point, as he doesn't have a victory over an elite fighter to support that claim.

He obviously declined as a fighter during his reign, but the vulnerabilities were there for all to see from his early title defences. It just needed the right kind of fighter to fully expose them.

People read too much into the training footage for the Barrera fight. If you were a fly on the wall in the camp for his earlier fights, it's likely that the same lack of discipline would be there. Hamed was never a great trainer, ate too much, trained at ridiculous hours and rarely did any roadwork. These flaws were there well before the Barrera fight.

Any argument that dismisses the Barrera fight on the basis that Hamed didn't train properly ignores the likelihood that he probably wouldn't train much for Marquez either.

I'd go for Marquez prime for prime, but Hamed in 1999 would have had a better chance considering that JMM wasn't yet the finished article.

Marquez was much sharper at 126 and would walk Hamed into clean counters and exploit his lack of balance. IMO the best Hamed could do is get a flash knockdown early but maybe not even that. I favor Marquez heavily. I was simply wondering whether Marquez could put forth enough offense to do better than MAB that night, who had the superior jab and used it to set up more offensive body shots. Marquez would land clean counters, but I'm not completely sold on the idea he'd do more damage over all, that's all.

It's a fact that starting with the Wayne McCulloch fight it was no longer prime Hamed in performance and physically he was not the same his last few fights, his conditioning was lacking as can be seen in his physique on the night of the the mab fight, got a belly on him post fight, hard to notice during the fight

At his best, more than capable of beating anyone at featherweight, including em, pac, mab and jmm

 

This is why you are deluded, more than capable to beat them while he never ever beat anyone even close to their level, are you at least aware that all of these guys are greater fighters than Hamed??? (which ever way you look at it, accomplishments or best wins)

 

Why the McCullough fight? What was so significant about that fight which took away Hamed's physical prime and meant he was no longer the same fighter?

Which of his fights are you using to form the opinion that Hamed would beat any of the names mentioned?

Obviously you can pinpoint the split with Ingle as a reason, but if you subscribe to that theory it ignores that there were issues in the relationship long before they parted ways. Ingle threatened to quit after the Cabrera fight, as he had reached breaking point with Hamed's attitude and lax approach to training. They stayed together for a few more fights, but there can't have been much benefit from the training as Hamed was barely listening to Ingle by this time.

While Hamed undoubtedly declined as a fighter, the extent of his decline is often exaggerated. Given his trouble with Medina, Johnson and Kelley in what was supposedly his "unbeatable" phase, it's a real stretch to pick him over any of the 4 best fighters of the era.
