He only did well against pressure fighters and he always struggled against more slick boxers. Seemed like he never wanted to be the pressure fighter and cut off the ring on guys.

A little overrated when you look at his resume and who he fought. He was a great counterpuncher at times and physically strong.

yeah I just think he was too one dimensional, if a guy didn't pressure him its like he didn't know what to do.

I give him more credit than that .. Highly technical boxer for me. And he went after John giving up the reach adv.

    Lol no he wasn’t/isn’t.

Marquez fought some tricky styles throughout his career and got wins like against Wheeler, Gainer, Polo for example. All movers that he beat. I also wouldn’t describe Barrera, Casamayor as straight forward brawlers either. Then there’s the robberies against Norwood and John. Marquez fought all kinds of styles with excellent results just because he got schooled by Mayweather doesn’t mean he’s impotent against slick movers. He even gave Bradley a close fight at 147 aged 40.

Agreed ... And I personally don't put to much stock in this fight, if at all. May was fighting 11 pounds over where JMM was … May was WAY to big for JMM

I thought he got a gift against Barrera, and his age is a lame excuse against Bradley. He could have won that fight if he applied pressure like he did in the last 3 rounds.

He's the only guy I can think of who ko'd the pfp number one fighter while in his late thirties and four weights above where started. (Yeah, he might've been juicing.)

He schooled Barrera. Barrera won four rounds max. I went to that fight and everyone at that fight felt the wide scores were accurate only to find Lederman had given it to Barrera which was one of his worst cards.

How is it a lame excuse? He was 40 and on his fifth division. We are talking about a man who was 33 as a Featherweight.

Not sure if he’s “overrated” because I have no idea how highly people rate him. But I do get the sense that a lot of people around here overstate some of Marquez’s strengths and overlook his flaws and limitations because they like him and enjoy watching him fight.

I thought the MAB fight was very close.
always thought that Morales and a MAB at thier best would beat him.
