I remember him being a long time WBA jr. welter champ and seeing his listing in ring magazine back in the day. Never recall watching him fight, unless I did and don’t remember. Anyone have anything to say about him?
Was the other light welter champ with Chazez. Bit of a mystery man only fought in Argentina. Good fighter but did have some dodgy decision win I seem to remember.
Coggi was one of the first fighters that I rooted against to lose just the same way I felt about Maromero Paez.... Coggi seemed very crude... made some great facial gestures when hit... acted surprised when a ref reprimanded him for an infraction.. but these days I have a much softer heart against the fighters I hated when I first really got into boxing as they served a great purpose on making sure to never miss them fight as I was looking to see them get Knocked OUT.. Frankie Randall did a solid job on Coggi... oh and in one fight Im pretty sure the ref flat out cheated to help Coggi retain his title....
It’s seems like all of those fighters from Argentina are cut from the same cloth .....strong as oxen ...and crazy as hell
Whipping uppercut, I remember that. The WBA loved him, as he's an Argentine. Recipient of the most egregious display of referee favoritism I have ever seen. He was simply not supposed to lose that fight to (I think) Eder Gonzalez. Shameful, shameful display.
I remember his grandmother, Rebecca "Bex" Coggi Estrada Villa Del Sol Mi Esparragoza San Martino Thai Loco Culo Brigganza Mui Gusto Perlito Ferlito Chico Hernandez Orecchio Alla Puttanesca. Some people would tell her to her face that her name was "dumb." But they rarely had an insult or an epithet at the ready for the tommygun that followed it.
Dodgy was not the word; out and out corrupt was nearer the mark! This content is protected Coggi would win in seven after that!
He was a good fighter. But without his chummy connection to the leaders of the WBA he wouldnt have done nearly as much. From 1987-1990 he was in his absolute prime. He knocked out Oliva, decisioned Brazier but then lost to Loretta Garza. Then he relied more on the largesse of the WBA The Gonzales I travesty is well documented.
