Verón shoves Hernández off after the Mexican's right arm gets caught up around his neck. Hernández pawing up with jabs and getting drilled with counter 1-2s.

I agree with the commentators and think Bebu misread the situation, believing 24K was badly hurt at the beginning of the 1st when really he was just caught off balance momentarily.

Verón's corner not thrilled with him blowing his wad like that.

 

Verón getting smothered now, unable to get full extension with his long arms with Hernández beelining into his chest with the line drive right jab doubled up. Hernández with a stiff left hand up top and follows up with a right hook. Hernández keeping his lead right foot inside Verón's left, cutting the ring off well.

Malignaggi thinks attempting to repel Hernández with brute force is a mistake. He's correct.

 

Verón fighting Hernández's fight. Close range, high pace, lots of different angles and altitudes. Verón very uncomfortable with the awkward southpaw pressure. Verón throwing bombs but not slowing his opponent. Verón cut on the right cheek.

Verón landing clean combinations but looking discouraged as Hernández walks through them. Hernández landing some hard body shots but Verón able to keep separation and score from range while not taking many headshot receipts.

I think Verón expected he would have gotten rid of a guy with a 17-6 record by now.

 

Verón has a 62-40 power shot landed edge through four.

 

Verón looking much more comfortable and relaxed in the 5th, boxing at distance. Getting booed heavily by the partisan Fresno crowd (there is an Argentinian contingent present and waving their white & blue flags, but vastly drowned out by the pro-Mexican one).

48-47 Verón

 

Reach disadvantage hurting Hernández...charging in with a double southpaw jab but not coming close to touching. Verón using his height and his younger fresher legs to stay off range while peppering in long straight 2- and 3-pieces and nimbly navigating the ropes without getting trapped on them.

58-56 Verón

 

Hernández scores a jab and the crowd goes wild. Verón still in control, however. Move, jab, and grab. Every time Hernández opens up he is getting countered by the quicker hands of Verón, which then respool like measuring tape before Hernández can even abort his original failed punch, let alone redirect a new one.

Turning into a bit of a schooling, unfortunately. The commentators think Hernández's game plan may have counted on taking over in the second half when Verón tired but that doesn't appear to be happening.

68-65 Verón

 

Hernández bowls in a hard underhanded body shot in pursuit, Verón hurt. Hernández is staying in close, picking off shots on his forearms or ducking and weaving and coming up firing. Verón trying to trot out to create distance but Hernández not letting him. Looping left and right hook scored inside for Hernández. Another good combo by Hernández muscling his way past a weak Verón jab.

10-9 Hernández, but he might have started to come on too late. On my card without a KD the best he can hope for now is a draw.

77-75 Verón

 

Overall in punches landed Verón has a 173-126 edge through eight, but in the last round Hernández outlanded him for the first time, 16-17.
