"If everything goes well with Medina, the plan is to fight in March of 2009, then look for Israel Vazquez in June. I don't see myself fighting Caballero. We want Vazquez for the summer in Madison Square Garden on the eve of the Puerto Rican Day Parade. We are going to take things step by step. If we beat Vazquez, the next logical move would be to fight Rafael Marquez in November or December," So it looks like intsead of going after the newly unified champ on a 4 year undefeated streak, young JuanMa will be targeting two guys who have spent the last couple of years beating the absolute **** out of eachother. Vasquez can barely put a coherent sentence together and Marquez is about to have second surgery for a detatched retena. I'm really worried about Marquez, his legs were very shakey in that last fight with Vasquez. I give the young man props for going after Vasquez(Vasquez is considered the top man in the division). However, the Marquez fight serves no real purpose. I would much rather see him take on Vasquez and then Caballero before moving up. However, it's a money driven sport. And people will pay good money to see their favorite fighters fight, even if they're damaged goods.
"I don't see myself fighting Caballero" just means that right now at this time he doesn't see a fight happening. Which is fine IMHO...he's still (more or less) an unfinished product..so taking baby steps is essential. I don't see a Marquez fight going through anytime soon but I'd definitely pay to watch it. Whatever gets Izzy and Rafa big pay days is fine by me.
And I don't understand this thread. JuanMa is ducking Caballero to fight the Chapion and the #1 contender in the division and the #5 and #7 P4P fighters in the world??? Yeah what a *****.
And come fightnight, he's going to throw his straight right followed by a left hook right on Izzy's chin, and Izzy will grunt like the shark he is and just keep coming for more. Izzy may end JuanMa's career to be honest, he should focus on fighting Vazquez, and do it properly, he has to be 100% ready for twelve rounds, because Izzy is a different type of animal than anything he's ever experienced.
Vasquez can barely put a coherent sentence together in English because that isn't his native language. He sounds ok in Spanish. I think the person getting the worse of the beatings is Marquez; I don't think will be the same after these fights (if 4 takes place). A Juan win over Caballero won't put him in the spotlight like a Vasquez or Marquez win, despite how bad Marquez may look by the time they meet.
Izzy is a very different sort of beast indeed...but for JuanMa the risk and the money is probably worth the potential reward. If he puts Izzy Vasquez to sleep (and/or retires him), he'll inherit the throne of said division. That means all the fighters would have to chase HIM and not Vice Versa. It's a lot easier to get things done when you're the target sometimes. But you are indeed correct...to be taking Izzy lightly means yer akin for an asswhooping.
Israel Vazquez - Juan Manuel Lopez will probably be 2009's FOTY if it does happend. If Israel shows up at 95%+ (many doubted him before the Marquez III fight, including Roach and he showed up good as usual) he will take Lopez deep and it'll hurt.:smoke
Nobody wants to see Juanma fight Marquez IF Juanma beats Vasquez. If Caballero is still champ, that is the fight to be made. Why would he say he doesn't want that fight is beyond me. I hope he isn't starting the "money fight" thing early in his career lol...
