thoughts on juanma Lopez and potential match-ups with fellow prospects or people at similar level/age particularly Gamboa? (notice no caballero) For me Juanma is so damn good that it really doesn't matter who he fights. His footwork and power for anyone under 130 is simply not fair. Only 3 guys come to mind under 130 that have a chance against Juanma: (1) Gamboa; (2) Abner Mares; and (3) Riggondeaux. Take Juanma up over 130 and he f*cks up Valero and dare I say Guzman as well? Yes I think Juanma is that damn good. The skills, footwork, power, patience & poise that I've seen from Juanma is once in a 30 year period when you're talking little guys. The most mouthwatering match-up is with Gamboa, Juanma's leverage allows him to roll against Gamboa's short fire attack and go into the 7th round which is the key to destroying Gamboa (just stay even in the first 6). Now Valero is easy pickings after a 3 round crossfire. Like i said Yes Juanma is that good and I'm on the bandwaggon.
Mr Lopez is an awesome boxer, and he's got barrel loads he still aint shown us. Wouldn't say a win against Valero is a given though, and if Lopez wins it'll be a decision. Shame Lopez didn't beat Pennalosa in more style. I like the boy.
I thought he was impressive against him, Gerry was a strong as an ox vet. with a chuvalo-esque beard and Juanma showed an array of skill and precise work, he forced the old man into retirement and had Freddie experience what his mentor did in Manila.
I'm not that up on him. He's a bit of a plodder as far as footwork. I certainly wouldn't be talking about Valero yet.
Granted, and Freddie was wise to keep telling Gerry that if he didn't start shifting momentum, he was gonna be pulled. But I just felt that Pennalosa was an oppurtunity for JuanMa to really pull off a top notch win, i.e a powerhouse stoppage against a man who is really only fighting thesedays because fighting is all he knows. I don't mean this as a criticism of JuanMa - Gerry Pennalosa is a scalp. But I definitely agree that Lopez is a potential elitist.
I'm not convinced yet. He seems to like things his own way a little too much at the moment, time will tell if he can win the tough ones.
Guzman is early talk, However he would take care of Valero trust me and Gamboa is more of a challange because he's a strong little ******* with some combos that could cut through steel. But JuanMa has the swagga and fu*king footwork that you don't see in 20 pounders every decade. This kid phenom is special! And I'm on record swinging from the Juanma tree so if I'm wrong I'll eat that crow! But I see beef steaks actually!
Don't do wind ups on these type of subjects. He's that good and i'm record, my friend! print this post PLEASE! on record!
Gaz, did you catch the Rigondeaux fight? I love this kid's story how he was handcuffed from the Fidel Castro reign but broke out when Fidel's brother Raul took control. Freddie is moving this ~28 yr. old at a lightning pace but I want to see him succeed. He got his American citizenship and loves fighting out of that California gym instead of the distractions and undeniable lure of that Miami Booty call so I wish the best for this little killer. Flaws yes, but you can't help but root for this little assassin. The guy is somewhat reminiscent of Sweet Pea. You just can't teach that Sweet Pea type stance that creates offense from the defense stance. I like this kid and will be *ahem* or tv watching every single one of his fights till he has that green belt around his waist with the IBO and WBO strap around his shoulder to unify. Damn this guy makes me happy to be a boxing die-hard!!
Guzman would slap him to death believe that. The way Lopez moves and the way Guzman moves is like night and day. But then again, Guzman is a shining example that no matter how talented it pays to be disciplined and to have a good team and backing, which Lopez seems to have.
Lots of factors involved into moulding the complete package, but the guys fightgame is the goods, i'm riding with Juanma and the Peterson's (particularly lamont) just like what I see, but i guess we'll just have to WAIT and see.
