I met, then Cassius Clay at Kutsher's Country Club, New York, in 1962.
And also, in New York City, before his fight with 'Six Gun' Sonny Banks.

Then, Muhammad Ali in October 1964, in Massachusetts at a place called
'The Chine Inn', where Sonji was present.

Then again, at Kutshers, just before his title fight with George Chuvalo 1966.

And at The Concord Hotel, New York in the summer of 1976.

In 1962, he presented himself as a fun wild-eyed kid, and very charismatic.
He talked to everybody and he was fun to be around.

The Catskills in 1962, was a great place, because many sports stars would come up to
the Resorts, so you would never know who would show up.

If anyone tells you that they knew he would be Great, they were flat-out lying.
No one could have that kind of vision.

But as a person and sports celebirty, has was very well liked at that time (1962).
No political baggage yet, and the boxing business seemed secondary.

    May 1967,

    'DIVORCE STARTS ALI'S DRAFT'

World Heavyweight Champion Muhammad Ali's religous (Black Muslim) and moral views
against a wife who paints her lips and wears hip-hugging pants and skirts, among
other things, led to his January 7, 1966, divorce and - to his current troubles with the draft.

Some might say his difficulties spring from his pacifist stand, his now famous declaration that he didn't have
    'nothin' against them Viet-Congs'.
But the truth is, if Ali had remained wed to attractive Chicago model-singer-entertainer, now turned
hair-salon trainee Sonji Roi, the draft board couldn't have touched him right now, despite his statements.

    JM36,

I think with the Selective Service Requirements, a married individual at the age of
24 would have had a different draft slot.
Being single, Muhammad Ali was in a higher-slot position.

    The Selective Service has '6' classifications;
    1) Delinquents, any person who registers, than fails to report for physical examination,
    induction, etc.
    2) Volunteers
    3) Registrants, age 19 to 25, single, or married after August 25, 1965, but not fathers.
    4) Registrants, age 19 to 25, married before August 25, 1965, but not fathers.
    5) Order of Call, age 26 to 34, the youngest to be taken first.
    6) Sixth Order, Ages 18 and up to 19, the older ages first.

Muhammad Ali and Sonji Roi were married in August 1964.
Muhammad Ali would have been in Group 4, if he had not been divorced.
