calzaghe-reid de la hoya-quartey nowadays u got so many promoters. back then u had w*rren who had virtually all the big name uk fighter. king & arum who dominated the american fight scene. too many promoters who don't work together to put these great shows on.
Those two were on a fantastic night called 'War of the Worlds', the adverts and all the buildup had the fantastic theme music from the Jeff Wayne CD of the same name; on the night they had the voice of Tom Baker introducing the program! :bbb
The sport was just as corrupt then as it is now. The Khan vs. Maidana night was top notch imo. I don't get to watch that much boxing on TV but surely you realize a lot of this is your nostalgia? No need to get so excited about theme tunes etc but fair play, sounds like a decent night of boxing.
I agree boxing's slipped in terms of hype and perhaps quality a little bit but I just find this a bit over the top lol.
I remember Judgement night, I remember them all. I remember Winky handing out skilled beatings to Foster and Dodson as well on undercards. Those were the days, and people wonder why i love boxing!. Well it was nights like that and if the whole thing was on a DVD with the whole show and build up and entrances i'd buy it. Great memories and proper PPV's!!.
I didn't make any reference to corruption in the sport. Yes I do realise this thread is about 'nostalgia', that was its purpose! I wasn't get that excited about the theme tunes etc, I was simply reflecting on some wonderful memories and hoping that it may do the same for others who watched the events live. And yes you're right it was a decent night of boxing, and personally I've yet to experience a better one!
I personally don't see how anyone who actually was a fan of the sport during the nineties, particularly the latter half, and was lucky enough to actually be part of all the build-up and the fight night extravaganza, could not think back with really fond memories and miss those great days.
Fair play. It's your memories. I know the angle your coming from. I think my cousin had this recorded on VHS for years, one of his favourites. Before my time by 5-10 years though.
Yeh i have got it on tape, i remember the whole night. I was only 10 years old, and i was profoundly affected by the aura of Mike Tyson. I was afraid for Evander Holyfield, Mike Tyson was just some myth for many years when i was a child........ Mike Tyson evoked allot of fear in me as a child, i was not afraid of Mike Tyson. But i felt sorry for his opponents and even as a young 10 year old i could psychological see that Frank Bruno was petrified......"I was very sympathetic". Yeh the box office events had a great feel to them back then, it made it even more of a event because they where on late into the night. I can remember that Lennox Lewis was one of the very few pundits who left the door open for Evander Holyfield to beat Mike Tyson......... "He kept saying, he just wants to see how Tyson will react when he is hit".......
they were great nights and they happened quite frequently back then when i went to see my first big fight naz vs ingle i remember driving back to london with my dad to get home in time to watch RJJ jr vs Gainer (i think) Don King had four world title fights from vegas that night one of them was mayorga vs andrew six heads lewis, they were good times the judgement night theme tune was great
As Tony Soprano once said "rember when" is the lowest form of conversation. Just kidding, sounds like a great night and not really before my time, if i had Sky back then. It` s a bloody shame that they think people would rather watch f1 then a great night of boxing
