Well it was bad for Gonzales. He lost his chance to be remembered as a "world" champion and was probably on the short end of the purse in the return.

 

Oh yeah, but he was struggled to be a household name in his own household. Coggi was big name for Argentinian boxing, and it would have helped that he managed to keep his crown. As for purses, I put it to you even if he had won the first fight, Gonzales would of still ended up with the short end of the purse in a rematch. And if he had (rightly) made a fuss about it, the WBA would of found (created) a by-law to strip him of the title.

 

That's what's all wrong about it. He should of won the title that night and got the lions share of the purse in the rematch. Who knows, it could of been a good payday. He might of invested it in a business. It could of been life changing for him.

 

But that is not going to happen, it would not be good for business...

 

I know you're playing devils advocate but what do you think? Is it all about business or are we talking political views here?

 

I think Boxing needs a big clean out. For the sport to grow again in the 'old boxing world' there needs to be a transparency in the way the sport is run.

I think this would be best achieved by using a UFC type model (from MMA). One organization holding all the cards. On top of this have an independent board of Governors, each with a representative from all parties involved in the sport, who oversee standardisation of the rules, training and appointment of officials and mediate and put forward recommendations for disputes that arise.

But I am just dreaming...

 

I don't really follow UFC but I think I probably agree with you.
