It is a robbery though, Ward didn't come to take the titles, he fought on the back foot, got out landed, dropped, bossed around and for all but a few rounds fought at a pace and distance he didn't like, he was stunned he lost and really people are making it sound closer because it was so bad.
People are acting like Ward was defending the titles and even that would be a struggle to give to him. Kov was the champion and he was the aggressor and did more and did it over 12 rounds, to me it was clear as day Kov won, that is a robbery because you can't really give Ward the fight with all these factors, Ward doesnt benefit the close rounds just because he is AMerican.

No, it was a blatant robbery for the reason I gave above.
I like Rummy, but he has always been pro-Ward.

Well at the end of the day you're entitled to your opinion. I thought Ward won.

Why does Ward get the close rounds?

Is it not true to become the champion, you have to take it to the champion? did Ward do this? honestly? this wasn't champion v champion, this was challenger v Champion, Challenger was given every close round even though he was less active, hurt and much less aggressive. I just can't accept that and it is going down the path of rewarding defensive minded fighters over offensive and thus killing the sport as a whole for the public. Look what Mayweather did for it after the Pac fight, casuals were so pissed off and UFC is taking over.

I gave Kovalev some close rounds too. Tbh I just scored on who I thought actually won the rd. For example 4, 10 were close rds but I thought Kovalev won it, just like 6, 12 for Ward.

I've scored it twice now and watched some individual rounds several further times. Obviously, I'm no pro, but I had no dog in this fight (and even if I did I'd like to think it wouldn't affect my scoring) and I have it close, with some obvious potential swing rounds which could have seen either fighter crowned the victor. What's your scorecard? I felt that this was a fight of two halves, generally speaking.

I have admitted on this forum before that perhaps I have a built in bias in scoring for "clean work"; or in other words, I favour the boxer over the fighter, who tend to produce the more efficient, clean and accurate work. It's something I've pondered and I wonder if judging has veered more in that direction during the Floyd Mayweather Jr. era. Nonetheless, I'm happy with this fight being seen either way, regardless of what angle I attack the scoring with when viewing it.

I need to go back and score this fight with the sound off. But, from what I saw, it seemed hard to argue against a 7-5 (115-113) win for Kovalev or at worst 114-113. That KD comes into play. A draw is certainly possible if some of the very close rounds (Lederman gave to Kovalev) went to Ward. 114-113 Ward seems like a slight stretch, upon first watch at least.
And this is coming from a big Ward fan, in Oakland, who picked Andre to win by decision.

Great fight though, from both guys. I was VERY impressed with Kovalev's boxing and how he remained so composed. The man is the goods, hands down. I was definitely impressed by Ward's toughness. He didn't let the knock down discourage him from taking the fight to Kovalev. He was losing the distance game to Kovalev and needed to get up in the man's chest. Eventually, he figured out Kovalev's rhythm too, and was slipping and countering more frequently. Amazing resilience and ring IQ on display from Ward. I think he wins clearly in a rematch. But, in THIS match, just watching as a fan, I felt Kovalev should have gotten the nod or least a draw and retained his titles.

Depends on your definition of a robbery. Larry Merchant said it was robbery after the fight the reporter questioned him and said why you had Kovalev up that much and he said no I had it 7-5 with kd even if it was 6-6 Kovalev wins they (meaning the judges) gave Ward 7 rounds. The wrong man won that is a robbery.
Now that's Merchant. I'm not saying that. I do agree with his score 7-5 Kovalev. But it was tough fight.
I just can't give the fight to Ward. He backed up all night and this was not Mayweather here, Kovalev out landed him. Kovalev was the aggressor, landed more punches, clearly landed the harder punches, scored the knockdown, and was the champ.
Ward grabbed a lot and pot shotted.
Can't give him 7 rounds on that. And let me be clear I was impressed greatly by Ward. I thought the fight was going to be over quick but Ward stayed in there weathered the storm and had his moment.
Just not enough for me to get the win over Kovalev who showed great resilience himself

First, I believe Kov won that fight 114-113 and I voted for Ward to win in this forum.

I thought Kov clinched as much as Ward, probably to counter the inside tactics of Ward. Ward was doing everything he could to win EVERY second including hitting on breaks. I was suprised Ward didn't clinch more considering the tight rope he was walking on. I thought it was one of Ward's cleaner fights.

It was a great fight and it was not let down.

This is a poll from Badlefthook.

    POLL
Who did you have winning Kovalev-Ward?
    • 69%
      Sergey Kovalev
      (1568 votes)

    • 24%
      Andre Ward
      (532 votes)

    • 7%
      Draw
      (162 votes)
    2262 votes total

Of course that all the 532 voters (probably americans and ward's fans) are wiser than the rest of 1730 voters. They are the only guys knowing something about boxing in the Universe...
