I agree. People let their personal dislike of Vargas cloud their judgement. The guy was very good. Sure his prime was short, but he was an excellent fighter during that period.
Vargas seemed to have lapses in concentration in all his fights, and gets tagged sometimes with big punches. He just plain doesn't have the chin to do this against Jackson. Would be an interesting fight whilst it lasted. Considering the chin of Jackson, it could potentially go the other way also, although not likely IMO.
Frankly, Jackson's chin is the primary reason I'm seeing a Vargas KO. I think people automatically look at Jackson's KO's and that Vargas has been stopped and hasn't looked good his final few fights, and don't look at how often somebody with very good skills (which Vargas had) and a good punch (which Vargas had) could hit Jackson. One of these two fighters got stopped in the first half of a fight 4 times. It wasn't Vargas. I would definitely give Jackson a fair shot of course, as it's foolish to write off that kind of power. But I think Vargas would win more often than not.
If Jackson can catch a slick Terry Norris then he is going to catch Vargas. And when he does it will be Jackson ko in 4
Thats got nothing to do with it. Jackson P4P is one of the most MUDEROUS punchers in the history of boxing. Vargas was essentially a come forward slugger who could box. BUT Vargas was never an intelligient fighter. His heart always ruled his head and he was easy to hit.Vargas would have the power to hurt Jackson but this would be a war in the centre of ring with Vargas loosing by a stunning and very early KO. There is no other outcome of this fight.
This is true, Vargas always seemed to have mental relapses in his fights and then get caught by a massive punch. No way in hell Vargas could last 12 with Jackson. Vargas was almost out in 20 seconds with Tito, Gotta give him props for sticking it out with Tito for 12 but DAMN he could NOT take a Jackson punch to the chin no way no how. For those saying Jackson would get KO'd...Rate Jackson's chin in comparison to Trinidad's chin..honestly how bad do you think Jackson's chin is to get KO'd
Vargas has enough skills to make this intersting for a bit but he still gets hit too often and I cant imagine him taking a Jackson right hand to well.
At Jackson's best, I'd have to say it'd be a Jackson knockout around the seventh or eighth round, just because despite Vargas boxing skill and sound fundamentals, his head movement would not be sufficient enough, nor would his footwork, to stop Jackson's murderous punching power. Jackson TKO8 Vargas IMO
