Watch the campas fight.... your going to tell me vargas was never a intelligant fighter? He was intelligant when he thought he had to be... unfortunatly at the critical times he lead with his heart not his head, but he def was and could be an intelligant fighter. He boxed circles around campas, hardly took any chances in that fight at all... great jab, movement, footwork, patience, ect.... same with the marquez fight, and even early in the ike fight... fought very smart, finding away around the great jab of ikes.

To say vargas was never an intelligant fighter is a gross overstatement

btw scurla... howd you like the witter fight :hey :yep :D

I'm suprised Vargas isn't way higher then he is. A prime vargas was pretty amazing and was certainly a better boxer then Jackson. IMO he's pretty under rated around here.

the vote is swayed mostly on what the prection of vargas chin is. the one that rember him b4 the tito fight . the people that picked Jackson remeber Vargas being at his best an almost getting ko'd in 1 st round

if jackson had landed he wouldn't have gotten up

IMO Jackson wasn't as skilled as Tito. And almost all the big shots that landed on vargas throughout his career were left hooks. Not Jackson's money punch, the right hand.

Personally, I think people see the name Jackson (a big puncher) and see Vargas a guy who got knocked out by another big puncher (Tito) and think that X + Y = Z. Well if boxing teaches us anything its that that "fighter A beat fighter B and Fighter C beat fighter A so fighter C would beat fighter B" type logic doesn't work.

no the thing is is that vargas goty hit with alot of right hands as well and His Ko losses are mostly to left hooks from big left hookers like tito and dlh . the one SSM landed was pretty sweet too but vargas was past it an look lathargic. a iactually had him out boxing mosely up untill the stoppage in their 1st fight. but no one threw a right hand like julian jackson at 154:deal

"If Jackson landed"....not every punch he landed was a knockout blow and how do you know he would?

Nope can't say that it would , Fenando never reached his full potential as a fighters and can not be compared to some of the best at 154 , he gets beat by terry norris , julian Jackson , mike McCallum,, I can't think of one great 154 pounder in the last 30 years that he compares with ...

I am just going to add this. I notice that some are mentioning that Vargas only got stopped by fighters who were superior to Jackson. This may or may not be true, as Jackson was a fantastic fighter at 154. Trinidad and DLH are greater no doubt....at 154? Not necessarily.

And lets not forget, in Jackson's prime, while he was stopped a couple of times himself, he wasn't stopped by nobodies. (I don't count his KO losses at 35+ in a discussion like this anymore than I count Vargas' KO from Mosley) McCallum is the only one to stop him at 154 and Gerald McClellan stopped him at 160. Not exactly light punchers....

agreed ,, McCellan ,McCallum and Jackson would be to much for 154 version of trinidad and the 154 version of Oscar as well as Vargus himself..

Vargas always seemed to get hit early. Jackson hit much harder than Tito or Oscar. Lights out for Vargas.
