sometimes I think that might be true just in that when he does land that punch, it is always when he lulls the fighter. In the gym there would be no reason to surprise them with that perfect punch. A guy like Hearns or Tyson has a hard punch all the time. But Julian Jackson had lights out power. He should have been called lights out not James Toney.
No, his power wasn't overrated. It's not only that he knocked his opponents out, but how he knocked them out. Their are plenty of fighters with excellent knock out percentages. But very few who knocked fighters cold with one punch. When Jackson landed cleanly, his opponents were usually totally helpless after the punch. And he could do it with the cross, the hooks , or uppercuts with either hand. His punching power wasn't the wind up kind, like Mugabi, or Foreman. But short, very quick, perfect technique like J.Louis. There was nothing overrated about Jackson's power. Hell, it could almost be underrated how hard he hit.
Julian went old school there: “I can’t catch you, so I’ll back into a corner where you have to come in my range. Bam, over.” Can’t wait for these other great threads: Willie Pep’s footwork: Overrated? Prime Muhammad Ali: Was he slow as molasses? Tex Cobb: Good chin or nah?
Another friend from my years in Dallas/FtWorth Quincy Taylor fought & stopped Julian Jackson to win the WBC Middleweight title. He said Julian hit like a jack hammer. Quincy dropped him with a bomb , He could hit too, he got up but wasnt really there & the ref stopped it. Another thing Julian was one of the nicest guys you could ever want to meet so was Quincy
Hagler wasn't really an iron chinned badass either. He was sort of cautious versus Duran. He must have been hiding something then.
At least he wasn't as proven as Fitz. Bob KO-ed basically all relevant HWs in his era. What Jackson did that was similar to it?
