Red, immediately after seeing this thread I made a list of the 10 greatest one-punch KO artists at any weight and Jackson made that list (along with the likes of heavyweights such as Earnie Shavers). If Jackson's power is overrated, then everyone's everything must be overrated because there's no valid measurement left to judge anything anymore!
I dunno, I think it's not bad at all. Questioning superlatives is part of what this place is all about. I took it as an invitation to discuss to what extent such a thing might be overplayed, and that's a fair question.
I agree with you as general point, I guess, but given this example I just wonder what the point was to this line of enquiry. And given the responses so far, did anyone pause for more than a second before they answered 'no'? Anyone can readily go onto YouTube and see that power and pretty quickly draw the same irrefutable conclusion. But, hey, it's indirectly inspired me to come up with my own thread so it's all good.
Yeah, guess he got his answer pretty quickly. He's certainly the biggest puncher I've seen myself. Others like Mugabi for example were powerful but dealt more in blunt-force trauma type stuff, like a miniature Foreman just driving a nail so to speak. With Jackson, there was a crispness and precision and electricity factor. Instead of blunt force, it was more like being struck by lightning. People just folded and went away.
If you could distinguish on a fighter's record how a knockout was scored beyond KO and TKO then Jackson probably could have his own category, KTFO.
Lol, Amen!! Dumbest thread I believe I've ever read....and that's saying something...I have always despised historical revisionism.
I would say the answer is no, Jackson as a fighter and a puncher seems fairly and objectively looked at by most people. If I was a middleweight of any generation I wouldn’t entirely relish fighting Jackson. Yes the elite level middleweights would beat Jackson, but while he is in there he’s dangerous. That knockout against Graham was epic considering the circumstances and Graham’s reaction afterwards.
Agreed. He was always going to be found wanting at the highest level but if he could find a way to land his punches he usually put people out. In my opinion he caused a lot of damage on McClellan in their first fight. McClellan took some legit bombs off him which was pretty crazy.
Perhaps he was overrated as most punchers tend to be. His power wasn't. If he hit you square he would shake even granite chins. I'll always remember The GMan McCellan saying he had a headache immediately after his first fight with Julian. Got of a haunting memory.
His power is overrated in the same way as Hagler's chin is overrated, which is to say, it's pretty damn hard to overrate it imo
If there are two fighters whose power can never be overrated it's Jackson and Tua. Both only had to touch guys and they dropped like stones.
