Less versatile? I love the way Cotto fights, but give Taylor his due. He was beautiful to watch in the ring. He would have stood toe-to-toe with Cotto even though he didn't have to. His Philadelphia mentality would have kept him in there and would have frustrated Cotto.
Chavez's peak was at 135, though he spent more time at 140, where he was also better than he was at 130. Much more technical later on.
Pound for pound Chavez is better than Cotto, but if you put them in the ring in their primes. I would still pick Cotto. He may not be as acomplished as Chavez but I think with the skills he has and the size advantage he would win. I would probbly take a 135 lbs chavez over a 140 Cotto, but i think Cotto is in his prime now at 147.
Cotto is one of the(if not THE) best WW at the moment but let's not get carried away here. The crowning jewel on his resume is a very close decision over a 36 year old Mosley:deal
It's going to be tough, but there's enough quality opponents at 147 and 154 to build a good legacy. Let's say he beats Margarito and De La Hoya to close out the year. That would give Cotto HOF status, which he doesn't currently have. In 2009, if he were to beat the winner of Quintana/Williams 2 and Mayweather, his stock would rise even higher. Then let's go even further and say he cleans out 147 beating guys like Berto, Clottey, Collazo, Nuzhnenko, and maybe Hatton if he unifies 140 and decides to come up for another big fight. That would give Cotto ATG status. A title belt or two at 154 would just be icing on the cake. Like I said, nothing will come easy, but he has the talent, youth, and ability to be remembered as one of the greats.
