You know, it's a shame that chavez padded his record with so many bums, obviously trying to reach 100-0. It can sometimes overshadow the fact that he was indeed a great, great boxer.

And, of course, tough as a coffin nail.

Glad you enjoy the video, guys. The idea was to try and debunk the widespread misconception on these boards that JCC was nothing more than a face first brawler type. The guy had serious, serious skills. Incredible ability.

HBO is guilty of spreading this bs as well. Pisses me off when I hear them say things that imply old mexican fighters had no defense and were just mindless brawlers. They said it again on the Pacquiao vs. Marquez fight. Something along the lines of Marquez being a true technician, unlike the Mexican fighters that came before.

Chavez had waayyy better defense than Marquez if you ask me.

It's non-debatable. JCC was clearly more adept at avoiding punches than JMM. Even the punches JCC couldn't avoid, he would minimize the impact the best he could by rolling or tucking his chin in to his chest. JMM has been knocked down multiple times in his career, and he rarely comes out of a fight without significant damage to his face. That's because his defence wasn't as good and he would take shots more square on than JCC.

JCC was a stud. Make no mistake about it.

Only late on in his career. Frankie Randall had him down with a straight right hand.

tsyzu dropped him I think Randall too...but he was not a better defensive fighter than Marquez watch prime Marquez at 126 and get off the bandwagon

You mean watch JMM at 126lbs where he fought very few fighters who actually posed as a genuine threat? The first time he fought a genuinely world class operator at that weight he was knocked down on three separate occasions. No shame in being knocked down by Manny, of course, but through the course of his career, I think it's fair to say JMM has been hit cleaner, more often, and more square on than JCC did in over 100 fights. There is a disparity in defensive abilities between the two, just as there is a disparity in their offensive abilities.

As much as I love Marquez, he is fiddle numero dos to Chavez in most areas of the game.

To be fair, there was also a big difference in the thickness of their skulls.
Chavez got hit plenty, but it wasn't JUST his (excellent) defensive skill that diffused those shots. He had one of the thickest craniums doctors have ever seen.

Hagler also had this advantage, and it's probably the only reason Chavez Jr. still has a career.

Hard to say if this diminishes the fighter in any way. Some are naturally faster, some are naturally stronger, some have better lungs.. so it's just a trait. But when you understand just HOW much of an advantage it gave Chavez, and you are comparing him to JMM in terms of defensive skill, you do have to factor it in.
