:deal this is the best I've seen him put his punches together.. He could tighten up the defense sone more though. I still thinks he loses as soon as he steps up though.
vanes looked like he got the better of chavez but keep in mind the cameras were rolling so he probably tried that much harder
Chavez needs to work better on the inside. (& learn how to defend that upper up the middle) Good sparring session. Vanes looks to be in tip top shape (Jr. looks to be in "Just started camp" shape)
Wow, Chavez is transformed then the shitty fighter he was 3 years ago. His body work looked vicious, his defense needs to get tightened up, but his power was definitely not lacking. He's a little to slow with his hands, one thing I kind of wish he did more was when he used a light uppercuts I wish he would follow up with some heavier shots. That look like it got Vane to pause for a second and I think Chavez would've got some good work in with those nice light taps had he set up power shots afterwards. His defense up the middle is way lacking. The uppercut was there for Vane all day. He tagged Chavez so many times. Vanes hands were on point, he had some very fast hands when compared to Chavez and I loved how he threw 4 to 5 shots while Chavez stuck to 2 to 3. One thing Chavez also did well now is blocked with his elbows and he has some decent mix up now. All and all I was very impressed with the Chavez of today. Maybe in another year or two he might be legit!
I heard an interview with Bob Arum, who when asked about Martirosyan getting the best of Chavez Jr in sparring said "yea Vanes got the better of him today but yesterday it was Chavez who was getting the better of Vanes."
Ultimately, it's just a spar. It showed the weaknesses of Jr that everyone already knows about, which is his total lack of defense and his somewhat lacking speed, but it doesn't mean much for him or Vanes.
Isn't the reason why Bob Arum moved to Showtime was because HBO bumped a Cotto-Martirosyan fight in favor of a Golden Boy fight?
Good observation! It absolutely looks like Vanes is finishing up a training camp being the sharper fighter with his timing on point, vs JCC Jr looking good in spots but just a little off and a half step behind. He's got a couple weeks to get that timing in check b/c he's got a fight coming up.
Thats what i saw. Vanes was flashy but the cleaner punches were being landed by JR. Im not really a fan of either but this was a hell of a sparring match between 2 upcoming fighters. Vanes won the gold in the Olympics didnt he?? I think without the head gear Vanes gets broken down also. Another thing. Was Vanes nose busted up? I thought i saw it bleeding and him pawing at the blood towards the end.
