Mayfield is jabbing willy-nilly into the air. Fernandez is keeping his gloves pressed tight and sneaking in some body shots while Mayfield is aimlessly flicking his fast hands all over the place. 1-2 by Mayfield rocks Fernandez late.

10-9 Mayfield but Colonel Bob Sheridan's broadcast partner gave it to Fernandez and you really could despite Mayfield's attempt to "SRL" it after finally waking up in the last twenty seconds.

Round 7

Mayfield is flurrying on the front-foot, pushing Fernandez to the ropes. Left uppercuts and overhand rights by Mayfield, keeping Fernandez shelled up and retreating. Mayfield is hitting Fernandez with more wrist than knuckle, very wild and loose. Fernandez is looking hurt and succumbing to lots of fast unanswered combos, spending lots of time on the ropes. Fernandez throws a big hook at the bell as Mayfield continues flurrying, just as the ref was having a look that may have signified thinking about stopping it.

Round 8

Mayfield is drawing the lead, with his head left unprotected and bowed forward in Fernandez's punching zone, and then leaping in with right hands past Fernandez's exploratory jab. Fernandez eats some flying 1-2s and gets backed into the ropes. No snap on Mayfield's shots or the wearied Fernandez would be out of there. Fernandez tries hooking his right over Mayfield's outstretched arms but can't reach his chin as Mayfield scoots out and to his left. Big low blow by Fernandez. Mayfield sells it. He takes a few moments to recover. Time in. Stiff jab by Mayfield for once, snapping Fernandez's head back. Double right hand by Mayfield. Fernandez is rocked into the ropes. Sloppy body shots by Mayfield. Double hook to the liver and head by Mayfield. Fernandez goes to his knees. He stays down.

Richard Gutierrez vs. Daniel Sandoval, 8 rounds @ light middleweight

 

Round 1

Hard right hands by Sandoval, bringing it to Gutierrez and trapping him on the ropes. Counter hook by Gutierrez but he is unable to keep Sandoval off for long. Gutierrez drops his arms, thrusting his chin out and goading Sandoval. Triple overhand right by Sandoval. Body jab by Sandoval.

I used to compare him to other "fast and flashy but flawed" athletic talents like Omar Henry and Shawn Porter, but now consider that comparison to have been extremely insulting to Henry and Porter. :-(

 

Round 2

Sandoval is bossing Gutierrez into the ropes, slapping his skull with right hands and digging in left hooks downstairs. Gutierrez is ducking in against him and inviting rabbit punches as Sandoval just keeps letting his hands go regardless of what Gutierrez is doing, including trying to clinch.
